　にわ の うめのき に、ことし、はじめて、うぐいす が とんできて、よいこえ で ないたのを きいた おとこ が、
　A man heard a Bush-warbler, which flew onto a plum tree in his garden, sang in a beautiful voice for the first time in the year.

　じまんがお で、となり の いえ に やってきて いいました。
　So he went to the next door with a proud look and said,

「いま、にわで、ことし いちばん の うぐいす の こえ を ききやした」
“I’ve just heard this year’s first song of a Bush-warbler in my garden.”

　すると、となり の おとこ は、
　But the man next door said,

「おまえ の ところ は、おそい なあ。おれん ところ なんざあ、きのう も、おととい も ないてらあ」
“Yours sang late. Mine has been singing since the day before yesterday.”

　それ を きいていた、むこうどなり の おとこ は、
　The man who lives across the street overheard the conversation and said,

「それ は おそい。しがつ に はいって きいたんでは、おそい。おれ なんざあ、せんげつ の すえ に きいたぜ」
“That’s late. Hearing one in April is late. I heard one at The end of last month.”

　そこへ、まけずぎらい の よこちょう の いんきょ が とおりかかり、
　Just then, a very competitive retired man who lives around the corner passed by and said,

「なに？　せんげつ だと？　おそい、おそい」
“What? Last month? That’s late.”

「ほう、さすがは、ごいんきょ。で、ごいんきょ は、いつですかい？」
“Wow, only you could say that. So when did you hear one?”

　すると ごいんきょ は、じまんげ に。
　The retired man proudly answered,

「きいて おどろけ。わし なんか、きょねん の はる に、きいて おいたわ」
“Don’t be surprised. I heard one last spring.”
