　むかしむかし、ある いけ に、たくさん の かめ が すんで いました。
　A long time ago, there lived many tortoises in a pond.



　あるひ の こと、かめ の たいしょう が いいました。
　One day, the boss of the tortoises said,

「なんでも りゅう は、うみ に せんねん、かわ に せんねん すむ と てん に のぼる そうだ。
“I heard if a dragon lives in the sea for a thousand years, and lives in the river for another thousand years, he will go to heaven.

　この わし は、この いけ に さんぜんねん も すんで おる から、もう そろそろ てん に のぼって も よいのでは ないかな」
　I am living in this pond for three thousand years. So I think it is time for me to go to heaven.”

　そして かめ の たいしょう が てん に のぼろう と した ので、それ を みていた むすこ の かめ が いいました。
　When the boss was going to the heaven, his son who was looking at it said to him,

「それなら、わたし も いっしょ に つれて いって ください」
“If so, please take me with you.”

　すると、その むすこ の よめ の かめ も、
　Then the wife of the son said,

「あなた が てん に のぼられる の なら、わたし も つれて いって ください ませ」
“If you are going to the heaven, take me with you, too.”

と、たのんだ の です。
　She asked to her husband.

　そうして つぎ から つぎ へ、まごがめ も、ひまごがめ も、みんな みんな、
　Likewise, one after another, all of the grandchildren and great-grand children asked

「わたし も、つれて いって ください ませ」
“Please take me to the heaven with you.”

と、たのんだ の です。

　そこで、かめ の たいしょう は、
　As a result, the boss said,

「よし よし、それなら、みんな いっしょ に つれて いって やろう。
“All right. If you wish, I will take all of you to the heaven.

　だが、いくら わし でも みんな を かかえる こと は できん から、みんな じゅんじゅん に まえ の もの の しっぽ を くわえる と いい」
　But even myself, I cannot hold all of you. So you hold the tail of a tortoise ahead of you in your mouth.”

と、いって、じぶん の しっぽ を むすこ に くわえ させて てん に のぼり はじめ ました。
　And he let his son held his tail in his mouth and began to go up to the heaven.

　そして むすこ の しっぽ を よめ が、よめ の しっぽ を まご がと、
　Then the wife hold the tail of the son, the grandchild hold the tail of the wife,

　その あと に なんぜんびき、なんまんびき の かめ が、じゅん じゅん に まえ の かめ の しっぽ を くわえて、だんだん と てん に のぼって いった の です。
　and over tens of thousands of tortoises hold the tail of a tortoise ahead and gradually they went up to the heaven.

　ところ が、まもなく てん に つく と いう ところ で、かめ の たいしょう が うしろ を ふりむいて、
　However, when it was almost in the heaven, the boss of the tortoise looked back,

「おーい、みんな、ぶじ に ついて きて おるか？」
“Hey, all. Are you following safe?”

と、たずねた の です。
　He asked.

　すると それ を きいた かめたち が、

「はい」

「はい」
“Yes.”

「はい」・・・・・・。
“Yes.” …..

と、みんな へんじ を した ので、
　All of them replied,

　くわえて いた しっぽ を はなして しまい、みんな あっと いうま に もと の いけ の なか に おちて しまった の でした。
　and they released the tails. Thus all of the tortoises soon fell into the pond where they came all the way from.
