　むかしむかし、いしどうじ と いう おてら の におうさま が もん の まえ に たっていると、
　A long time ago, when a guardian god of a temple called “Ishido-ji” was standing in front of a gate,

　いちわ の カリ が とんできて いいました。
　one wild goose flew to him and said,

「たいへん、たいへん！　におうさま、ことりたち の おや が びょうき に なって しまいました！」
“There’s a trouble, my guardian god! The parents of the little birds got sick!”

「なんだって！　では すぐに、こども の ことりたち に しらせよ！」
“Are you sure of that? Then let the children of the little birds know about that!”

  そして、しらせ を うけた スズメ の こども は、
 Soon after the child of sparrow heard the news, he said,

「それ は たいへんだ！」
“Oh my goodness! ”

と、あわてて おや の ところ へ とんで かえって おや の かんびょう を しました。
　And he just left where he was to fly back to his parents’ to look after them.

　おかげ で おや の びょうき は よくなり、おや は しななくて すんだのです。
　Thanks to his sincere care, his parents could survive from the illness.

　ところ が しらせ を うけた ツバメ は、
　However, when the child of swallow heard the news, she said,

「すぐ に かえってこい と いわれても、こんな かっこう ではね」
“Even though he tells me to go home immediately, I can’t go with these clothes.”

と、じぶん の みなり を き に して けしょう に じかん を かけた ため、
　And because she took time to get her makeup,

　おや の びょうき は わるくなって おや は しんで しまいました。
her parents’ disease progressed badly and they had passed away.

　そして おなじ よう に しらせ を うけた コウモリ は、
　Likewise when the child of bat heard the news, he said,

「いま、あそんでいる ところ だから」
“I am playing right now.”

と、おや の ところ へ かえろうとも しなかった の です。
　And he did not even go home to see his parents.

　さて、そのこと を しった におうさま は、
　Meanwhile, when the guardian god know what had happened to the three little birds, he said,

「おやこうこう な スズメ は、とても かんしん だ。これから は、おいしいもの を たべて くらす よう に」
“You, the sparrow is very loyal to your parents and I am very impressed. You are allowed to eat good food from now on.”

と、にんげん と おなじ よう に おこめ を たべる こと を ゆるした の です。
　He allowed to eat rice as humans do.

　しかし、おくれて しまった ツバメたち には、
　But the guardian god said to swallows which was late to go to his parents’,

「おや の いちだいじ に おくれる とは けしからん」
“You are outrageous being late for your parents’ emergency.”

と、スズメ の よう に おこめ を たべる こと は ゆるさず、
　He forbid the swallow to eat rice as sparrows do,

　いね が みのる ころ に なる と とおい くに へ いく ように と めいれい したのです。
　and ordered to go to a country far away from there when the harvest season arrives.

　そして、あそびほうけて かえろう とも しなかった コウモリ には、
　As for the bat which kept playing and did not even return home,

「おまえ の ような やつ は、かお も みたくない！
“How dare you show me your face!

　いっしょう くらい ところ で せいかつ していろ！」
　You stay in the dark throughout your life!”

と、ひるま は くらい どうくつ に かくれて、
　The guardian god ordered the bat to hide in the dark cave during daytime

　よる に なって から こっそり そと へでる ように と めじた の です。
and come out from the cave quietly after dark.
