　むかしむかし、くろべ の やまおく では、ふしぎ な こと や おそろしい こと が よく おこりました。
　A long time ago in the depth of the mountains of Kurobe, strange things or scary things happened vey often.

　きこり が き を きろう と して オノ を うちこむ と、
　When a lumberman was going to cut down a tree and set an ax on a tree,

　とたん に そら が かきくもって やま や たに が おおきな おと を たてて うごきだしたり、
　the sky got clouded all of sudden, mountains or valleys began to move loudly,

　とっぷう が ふきつけて きこり を くうちゅう に なげとばしたり、
　the gust of wind blew a lumberman in the air,

　き に のぼっている ひと は じめん に たたきつけられたり する の です。
　or people on the tree were slammed on the ground.

　これは、テング の しわざ だと いわれて いました。
　People said it was a long-nosed goblin.



　ある とき、さんりん の きりたおし を まかされて いた おとこ が、
　One day, when a man who was asked to cut down trees in the mountain forest

　おおぜい の きこり を やといいれて さんりん を きりたおそう と した ところ、
　hired many lumbermen and they were going to cut down the trees,

　やはり そら が かきくもって やま や たに が おおきな おと を たてて うごき はじめました。
　the sky began to get clouded and the mountains and the valleys began to move loudly as expected.

　そこで おとこ は たに に むかって、おおきな こえ で いいました。
　Then a man said to the valley in a loud voice,

「われわれ は とのさま に、なんびゃくりょう もの おかね を おさめ なければ ならない のだ。
“We have to pay to our feudal lord several hundred Ryo(old currency).

　たに の き を すべて きりだして も、まだ たりない くらい だ。
　It would not be enough even if we cut down all of the trees in this valley.

　テング よ。
　Listen, long-nosed goblin.

　おまえ が じんつうりき で め の まえ に おかね を つんで くれる ならば、われわれ は き を きらぬ ぞ」
　If you use your supernatural power and offer us money, we won’t cut trees.”

　いいおわる と おとこ は、ソロバン を パチパチ と はじいて みせました。
　He said so and he took his abacus.

「ほれ、これだけ の おかね を、おまえ に ようい できる か？」
“Look. Can you prepare all of this money?”

　すると おおきな おと が、ピタリ と やみました。
　Soon afterwards, the loud noise stopped.



　それから は まいにち が よい てんき で、き に オノ を いれて も なに も おこらなかった と いう こと です。
　Since then, the weather was fine every day and nothing happened even if the lumbermen put axes on the trees.
