さいこう の たからもの
The Greatest Treasure

　むかしむかし ある ところ に、たからもの を あつめる のが だいすき な おとこ が いました。
　One upon a time long ago there lived a man who’s fancy it was was to collect valuable things.

　おとこ は せかいじゅう を たびしてまわり、キラキラ ひかる ほうせき や、きん で できた ぞう や、うつくしい ぬの など を あつめていたのです。
　The man had traveled the world and had collected shiny precious stones, gold statues and beautiful cloths.



　あるひ、たび の とちゅう で ひ が くれて しまった ので、
　One day, while on his travels the sun was setting and it was getting dark.

　おとこ は ちかく に あった むら の ちいさな いえ に とめて もらう こと に なりました。
　So the man decided to head off in the direction of a small village nearby stay in one of the houses for the night.

「なに も ありません が、どうぞ ゆっくり して いって ください」
"I have nothing to offer, but please, welcome to my humble abode."

　その いえ に すんでいた せいねん は、そまつ な さら に いれた スープ を おとこ に さしだしました。
　The youth that lived in the house served the man some soup in a poor looking bowl.

　おとこ は あいそわらい を しながら、こころ の なか で つぶやきました。
　While putting on a false smile the man muttered to himself.

(ほんとう に なに も ない ところ だな。
"This really is a place with nothing.

　いえ は ボロボロ だし、この さら だって、まるで ガラクタ じゃないか)
　The house is falling apart and look at this bowl, its completely worthless "

　おとこ は スープ を のみながら、じぶん が あつめた かずかず の たからもの の こと を、せいねん に じまん しはじめました。
　While the man was eating his soup, he started to boast about all the treasures he had collected."

　せいねん は だまって きいて いました が、やがて こんな こと を いいました。
　The youth was listened silently, but after a while spoke out.

「この むら にも、すてきな たからもの が ありますよ」
"There is also wonderful treasure in this village you know."

「なんだって。ほんとうかい？」
"What is that? Is that true?"

「ええ、ほんとう です」
"Yes, there is."

「ようし、それなら、その たからもの と やら を みせて もらおう じゃないか」
"Well, then I wonder if I might not be able to see those treasures eh!"

「わかりました。では、あす の ゆうがた まで まって ください」
"Ok, please wait till tomorrow evening."

　どうして あす の ゆうがた まで またなければ ならない のか、おとこ は ふしぎ に おもいました が、
　Although the man wondered why he had to wait until the following day,

　とにかく せいねん の いうとおり に する こと に しました。
　he decided to do as the youth had asked.



　つぎ の ひ の ゆうがた、せいねん は おとこ を むら の はずれ に つれて いきました。
　On the evening of the next day, the youth took him to the outskirts of the village.

　そこ には いえ も ほとんど なく、そら が ひろびろ と かんじられます。
　There were almost no houses there and the sky appeared wide and expansive.

　せいねん は、とおく に みえる やま の ほう を ゆびさしました。
　The youth pointed to a mountain way off in the distance.

「ほら、みて ください」
"There you go, please look "

　せいねん の ゆびさす ほうがく を みた おとこ は、おもわず いき を のみました。
　The man looked in the direction of where the youth was pointing and stared in amazement.

　どこまで も ひろがる そら は、あかいろ や だいだい や きいろ や さまざま な いろ で みごと に そめられ、むらさきいろ や さくらいろ の くも が たなびいて いました。
　The empty sky which stretched out before him was dyed in beautiful colors of red, orange, yellow and purple and pink clouds were hanging over that.

　そして その なか に、くろぐろ と した やま の すがた が うかびあがって みえました。
　And below that, the dark black shape of the mountain was to be seen rising up into the sky.

　おとこ は しばらく、なにか いう のも わすれて、その けしき を みつめて いました。
　The man stared at the view without uttering a single word.

　やがて おとこ の め から、ひとすじ の なみだ が ながれおちました。
　Before long, tears started flowing from the mans eyes.

「どうでしたか。きれい だった でしょう」
"How was it? It was so beautiful, wasn’t it."

　いえ に かえる みちすがら、せいねん は にっこり わらって おとこ に はなしかけました。
　On the way back to the house the youth smiled at the other man.

　おとこ は、なに も いわず に うなずき ました。
　The man then nodded in agreement.

　ゆうやけ が、あんな に いろいろな いろ を していた なんて。
　How the sky had been lit up with so many colors,

　さくらいろ の くも が、ある なんて。
　And what clouds of cherry pink,

　やま が あんな に、おごそか な すがた を みせる なんて…。
　And how majestic the mountain had been

「すてきな たからもの でしょう？」
"Wasn’t that a marvelous treasure? "

　せいねん は、ふたたび おとこ に はなしかけました。
　The youth spoke to the man again.

　おとこ は、せいねん の ほう を むき、こう こたえました。
　The man then turned to the youth and answered.

「ああ。さいこう の たからもの だよ」
“Yes, that was The Greatest Treasure."
