Snake Legs

　むかしむかし、むらびとたち が あつまって、おてら の そうじ を していました。
　Once upon a time, some villagers had gathered together and cleaned the local temple.

　そうじ が おわる と、おぼうさん が おさけ を いれた ツボ を もってきました。
　After the cleaning was finished, the Buddhist priest brought out a pot of rice wine.

「ごくろうさまでした。
"You must all be tired.

　すこし ですが、おさけ を めしあがってください」
　Its not much, but please help yourself."

「ありがとう」
"Thank you"

　みんな は おれい を いって、おさけ を うけとりました。
　Everybody thanked the priest and received the rice wine.

　ところが むらびと は ５にん いるのに、おさけ は ツボ に ひとりぶん しか 入っていません。
　But even though the villagers are five people, drink does not contain only one person in the pot.

　みんな は おれい を いって、おさけ を うけとりました。
　To drink with everyone, it is not very enough.

　すると、ひとり の おとこ が いいました。
　Thereupon one man made a suggestion.

「では、こうしたら どうだろう。
"How about doing it like this?

　みんな で じめん に、ヘビ の え を かく きょうそう を するのさ。
　why don’t we have a competition to draw a snake on the floor.

　いちばん はやく かきあげた もの が、ひとり で おさけ を いただくんだ」
　The person who can draw the snake the fastest can get to drink all the rice wine."

「なるほど、それは おもしろい。
"That’s a good idea.

　よし、それで きめよう」
　Right , lets decide then"

「では いくぞ。よーい、ドン！」
"Ok, lets do it. Ready...Go! "

　みんな は いっせい に、ヘビ の え を かきはじめました。
　Everybody then started to draw their pictures of snakes.

　すると ひとり の おとこ が、いちばん はやく かきあげました。
　Thereupon, one of the men quickly finished drawing a snake and was the first.

「できたぞ！　おれ が いちばんだ！
"I’m finished! I am the first!

　あっははは。みんな には わるい が、この さけ は おれ が ちょうだい するよ」
　Ha ha . I know its a little unfair, but I think I will drink that rice wine then"

　おとこ は そういって さかツボ に て を のばそうと しました が、ふと き が ついて、
　After saying so, the man stretched out his hand to reach for the rice wine bowl, but then realized something,

「しまった！　これ は しくじったぞ。
"Oh! I forgot! I made a mistake.

　ヘビ に あし を つける こと を わすれていた」
　I forgot to put legs on the snake."

と、あわてて ヘビ の あし を かきはじめたのです。
　He then hurriedly started to draw legs on his snake picture.

　すると それより さき に、ほか の おとこ が ヘビ を かきあげました。
　But just before that ,another man had just finished drawing his own snake.

「できた。さけ は、おれ の もの だ」
"I finished. The alcohol is mine."

　おとこ は そう いう と、おさけ を おいしそう に のみました。
　After saying so, the second man then drank up all the rice wine.

　はじめ の おとこ が ざんねんそう に みて いる と、さけ を のんだ おとこ が わらって いいました。
　The first man looked disappointedly across to the second man who spoke out while laughing.

「バカだな、おまえ は。
"How foolish you are.

　よく かんがえて みろ、ヘビ に あし が あって たまるもんか。
　Think! Does a snake have legs?

　そんな よけいな もの を くっつけよう と する から、こんな うまい さけ を のみそこねるんだよ」
　Because you added more than was necessary, you couldn’t get to drink this rice wine."




　それからです、よぶんな もの を つける こと を 『だそく』と いう よう に なったのは。
　From then on, the saying "Snake Legs" came to refer to putting excessive things on the unneeded.
