　むかしむかし、アメリカ の いなかまち に、プリンづくり の じょうずな シンプソンおばさん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived Aunt Simpson who was good at making puddings in a country town in America.



　あるひ、シンプソンおばさん は パーティー を ひらいて、
　One day, she planned to have a party

　みんな に とびきり おいしい プリン を ごちそう する こと に しました。
　and treat her delicious pudding to the guest.

　シンプソンおばさん は ひ を おこす と、プリン を コンロ に かけました。
　After making fire, Aunt Simpson put the pudding on the stove.

「あと は、やきあがる のを まつ だけね。
“All I have to is just wait until it’s done.

　・・・そうそう。おきゃくさま が みえる の だから、この あいだ に おそうじ を しましょう」
　Oh, yes! Meanwhile, let’s clean the house because a lot of guests will be here.”

　シンプソンおばさん は、まど を ふいたり ゆか を はいたり と おおいそがし です。
　Aunt Simpson became very busy washing the windows and sweeping the floor.

　しばらくして シンプソンおばさん は、あること を おもいだしました。
　After a while, Aunt Simpson remembered one thing.

「いけない。プリンづくり に だいじ な しお を いれわすれたわ！」
“Oh gosh. I forgot to put salt in the pudding, the important ingredient!”

　シンプソンおばさん の プリン が おいしい ひみつ は、ほん の ちょっぴり かくしあじ と して いれる しお です。
　The secret of Aunt Simpson’s delicious pudding is she put salt as a hidden flavor.

　あまい プリン に、しお を いれるの？
　You might wonder why she put salt in sweet pudding,

と、おもう かも しれません が、これ が ない と プリン が おいしく できません。
　but you can’t make a good pudding without it.

　シンプソンおばさん は プリン に しお を いれよう と して、じぶん の て が よごれている のに きづきました。
　When Aunt Simpson was about to put salt in the pudding, she noticed her hands were dirty.

「あら、おそうじ で て が まっくろね。
“Oh dear, my hands got dirty from cleaning.

　・・・そうだ、ちょうじょ の スウ に たのみましょう」
　I know! I’ll ask my oldest daughter Sue.”

　シンプソンおばさん には、さんにん の むすめ が いました。
　Aunt Simpson had three daughters.

　いちばん うえ が、「スウ」
　The oldest is named Sue,

　にばんめ が、「セイリイ」
　the second one is named Seiry,

　さんばんめ が、「リル」です。
　and the youngest is named Lir.

　シンプソンおばさん は、じぶん の へや に いる スウ に たのみます。
　Aunt Simpson went to ask Sue who in her room.

「スウ。プリン に しお を いれて おくれ。わたし の て は、まっくろ だから」
“Can you put salt in the pudding, Sue? My hands are so dirty.”

「だめよ、おかあさん。あたし、パーティー で きる ふく を ぬっているの」
“Mom, I can’t. I’m sawing a dress to wear to the party.”

「そう。・・・じゃあ セイリイ、おねがい だから プリン に しお を いれて」
“I see. Then how about you, Seiry? Can you please put salt in the pudding?”

「だめ。リル に させてよ。あたし いま、パーティー に はく クツ に あぶら を ぬっているん だから」
“No. Ask Lir. I’m waxing my shoes now to wear to the party.”

「そう。・・・じゃあ リル、おねがい だから プリン に しお を いれてね」
“Ok. Then Lir, can you put salt in the pudding?”

「あたし も だめ。いま、おきにいり の リボン を さがしているの。
“I can’t do that, either. I’m looking for my favorite ribbon.

　パーティー には あの リボン を つける と、まえ から きめているの」
　I’ve decided to wear that ribbon to the party.”

　みんな に ことわられて、シンプソンおばさん は がっかり です。
　Aunt Simpson felt disappointed because none of her daughter helped her.

「やれやれ。じぶん で いれる しか ない のね」
“Whew. I have to do it myself then.”

　シンプソンおばさん は て を あらう と、じぶん で プリン に しお を いれました。
　Aunt Simpson washed her hands and put salt in the pudding.



　さて、プリン に しお を いれた シンプソンおばさん が そうじ に もどる と、
　When Aunt Simpson got back to cleaning after putting salt in the pudding,

　リボン が みつかった リル が だいどころ に やってきて、プリン に ひとつまみ の しお を いれました。
　Lir, who found her favorite ribbon, came to the kitchen and put a pinch of salt in the pudding.

　リル が でていった あと、クツ に あぶら を ぬりおわった セイリイ が だいどころ に やってきて、
　After Lir went out of the kitchen, Seiry finished waxing her shoes and came to the kitchen

　プリン に ひとつまみ の しお を いれました。
　and put a pinch of salt in the pudding.

　ふく を ぬいあげた スウ も だいどころ に やってきて、プリン に ひとつまみ の しお を いれました。
　After finishing sawing her dress, Sue came to the kitchen and put a pinch of salt in the pudding.

　こうして シンプソンおばさん の プリン は、とても しおからく なって しまいました。
　Thus, Aunt Simpson’s pudding turned very salty.



　その よる、パーティー に あつまった おきゃくさんたち に、シンプソンおばさん は きりわけた プリン を くばりました。
　That night, Aunt Simpson cut the pudding into pieces and distributed them to the guests.

「さあ、おまちどおさま。まず は、しんぷさん から どうぞ」
“Here you go. I’ll give it to Father first.”

「はい、ありがとうございます。
“Thank you.

　こんな に おいしい プリン が たべられる のは、かみさま の おかげ です」
　Thanks to God, we are able to eat this delicious pudding.”

　しんぷさん は くち を おおきく あける と、パクリ と プリン を たべました。
　Father opened his mouth and had a big bite of the pudding.

　すると、その とたん、
　Then,

「ウヒャァー！！」
“Whoa!!”

と、しんぷさん は、すぐ に みず の はいった コップ に とびつきました。
　Father quickly grabbed a glass of water.

　みんな は なに が おこった のか わからず、ポカーン と しています。
　Not understanding what really happened, everybody there looked at a loss.

「これ は、どういう こと かしら？」
“What on earth happened?”

　シンプソンおばさん は プリン の あじみ を して、すぐ に げんいん が わかりました。
　As soon as Aunt Simpson tasted the pudding, she found out the cause.

「からい！　この プリン に しお を いれた のは、いったい だれ なの？！」
“It’s salty! Who put salt in this pudding?”

「わたしよ」
“I did”

と、スウ が いいました。
said Sue.

「あら、わたし も いれたわ」
“Really? I put some too.”

と、セイリイ も いいました。
said Seiry.

「わたしも！」
“So did I!”

と、さいご に リル も いいました。
then said Lir as well.

「おやおや。でも これで、プリン は しおかげん が だいじ だっていう こと が わかった でしょう」
“Oh, my. But now you understand how important it is to put a proper amount of salt, don’t you?”

「はーい」
“Yes!”

　シンプソンおばさん の ことば に はんたい する ひと は、だれ も いません でした。
　None of the girls were against what Aunt Simpson said.
