　むかしむかし、人をだます事が得意なジャックという男がいました。
　Once upon a time there was a man named Jack who was good at tricking people.

　ある日、地獄から悪魔がやって来てジャックに言いました。
　One day, a devil came from hell and said to Jack.

「おい、お前が人をだます事が得意なジャックだな。
“Hey, you. You are Jack who is good at tricking people. Right?”

　よしよし、お前の様な悪人の魂は高く売れるからおれさまが買ってやろう。いくらだ？」
“Well, well. The soul of the bad supposed to be expensive so I will buy. How much?”

　悪魔に魂を買うと言われてジャックはびっくりしましたが、
　Jack was so surprised to hear that a devil would like to buy his soul.

(どうせ、おれは悪人だから死んだら地獄行きだ。
(Anyway. I’m such a bad man so I have no choice but to go to hell after death.

　それならこの悪魔を利用して、死ぬ前に遊びたおそう)
　Well, I will make a deal with the devil and enjoy the rest of my life to the fullest.)

と、考え、悪魔にこう言いました。
　He thought about such things and said to the devil.

「おれの魂を買うと言うのなら、代金は銀貨だ。
“If you buy my soul, you should pay for silver coins.

それも、使っても使っても財布からなくならない銀貨にしてくれ。
　I need silver coins enough not to use them up in my wallet.

そしたら10年後、おれの魂をあんたにやろう」
　Then I will give you my soul.”

「よし、それでは10年間、おれがなくならない銀貨になってやろう」
“Right. I will change myself into silver coins. You will never use them up for the coming ten years.”

　悪魔はそう言うと銀貨に変身して、ジャックの財布の中に飛び込みました。
　Leaving the words, the devil changed himself into silver coins and jumped into the wallet of Jack.

　それからジャックは、使っても使っても数がへらない悪魔の銀貨を使って遊び回りました。
　Since then, Jack indulged himself in spending silver coins which don’t decrease even if how much he used.

　そして10年後、悪魔の銀貨が財布から飛び出してきて、元の姿に戻りました。
　10 years later, the devil changed back into himself and jumped out of the wallet.

「どうだジャック、10年間を楽しんだか？
“Hey, Jack. Have you enjoyed your days for 10 years?

　 さて、約束通りお前の魂をもらうよ」
　Now, as we promised, I will take your soul.”

「ああ、約束だから魂を持って行くがいい」
“Of course, a promise is a promise. You can take it.”

「ただ、約束したのは10年前のお昼過ぎで、今はまだお昼前だ」
“Though, it was shortly after noon 10 years ago. But it’s still before noon.”

「魂を取られる前に最後の食事をしたいから、あのリンゴの木になっているリンゴを取ってくれないか？」
“Before I will be taken my soul, I would like to enjoy my last meal. Would you please take an apple from the tree for me?”

　ジャックはそう言って、一本のリンゴの木を指さしました。
　Jack said so and pointed to an apple tree.

「そうか。それなら最後の食事を楽しむといい」
“All right. You can enjoy your last meal.”

　悪魔はそう言うとリンゴの木に登って、低いところにあるリンゴの実を取ろうとしました。
　The devil said so and climbed up an apple tree and tried to take an apple at the bottom of the branch.

　するとジャックが、上を指さして言います。
　Then Jack told the evil pointing to a higher place.

「それはまだ小さい。最後の食事だから、もっと大きいリンゴが欲しい」
“That is still small. I would like to have a bigger one for my last meal.”

「では、これか？」
“How about this”

「いいや、それではまだ小さい。もっと上の、あの葉っぱの奥にあるリンゴだ」
"No, it's still small. That one! Higher! Behind the leaf!"

「よし、あの葉っぱの奥だな」
"I got. Behind that leaf!"

　悪魔はさらにリンゴの木を登って、ジャックが指さしている葉っぱをめくってみました。
　The devil climbed higher up the apple tree and turned over the leaf Jack pointed.

　そして葉っぱの奥にある物を見てびっくりです。
　He was surprised at what was behind the leaf.

「うぎゃーーー！　十字架だー！」
“Oh my! The Cross!!!”

　何と葉っぱの裏の枝に、十字架が彫ってあったのです。
　What he saw behind the leaf was a branch inscribed in the shape of Cross.

　実はこの十字架、昨日のうちにジャックが木に登って彫り刻んだ物でした。
　Actually, the day before, Jack had climbed up the tree and inscribed the Cross.

　十字架を見た悪魔は恐怖で体が固まってしまい、その場から動く事が出来ません。
　The devil who found the Cross became so scared and stiff that he couldn’t move anymore.

　悪魔は、なさけない声でジャックに頼みました。
　He begged Jack in a pitiable voice.

「ジャッ、ジャックさん。どうか助けてください」
“My dear Jack, please, please help me.”

「ああ、助けてやってもいいが、おれの魂を取る事をあきらめるかい？」
“Of course, I will. Though, you have to give up taking my soul. Could you?”

「はい、あきらめます。あきらめますから、早く助けてください」
“Yes! I will give up! I will! So, please help me now!”

「よし。だが、どうせおれは地獄行きだ。
“Good. Though, I'm supposed to go to hell, anyway.

　だから、死んでも地獄へ行かなくてもすむ様にしてくれないか？」
　So, I ask you to make me not go to hell after death.

「えっ？　それはちゃっと・・・」
“What? That is…”

「いやなのかい？　いやなら助けてあげないよ」
“No? See, I don’t mind. Then I will not help you.”

「ひぇー！　分かりました。死んでも地獄へ行かなくてもすむようにします」
“Oh, dear!!! I see, got. I will make you not go to hell after death!”

「口約束では駄目だ。ちゃんと契約書を書いてもらうよ」
“Verbal promise? No! I need a written agreement.”

　こうしてジャックは悪魔を助ける代りに、死んでも地獄へ行かなくてすむ契約書を手に入れたのでした。
　In this way, Jack got a contract which made him protect from going to hell instead of helping the devil.

　さて、それから何十年か過ぎて、とうとうジャックに寿命が来ました。
　After the decades, at last, Jack reached the end of his life.

　死んだジャックに地獄からの使いが来ましたが、
　A messenger came to the dead Jack from hell.

　ジャックが悪魔との契約書を見せると、
　Jack showed the messenger the contract with the devil.

　地獄からの使いはあきらめて帰っていきました。
　Checking the contract, the messenger admitted and went back to his place.

「よしよし、これで地獄行きはまぬがれた。
“Well done. I have escaped going to hell.

　おれが行くのは天国さ」
　My end of a journey is heaven!”

　ジャックは天国へ行くと中に入ろうとしましたが、天国の門番がジャックを中に入れてくれません。
　Jack went to heaven and tried to go in. Though, the gateman didn’t allow him.

「お前は多くの人をだました悪人だ。天国へ入れる事は出来ない」
“You are the evil man who deceived so many people. I can’t allow you to go in.”

「そっ、そんなー」
“What hell!?”

　こうしてジャックは、カブをくりぬいた中に石炭を入れた明かりを持って、
　People say that having a hollowed-out, turnip-made lantern in which coal is,

　地獄と天国との道を今でも行ったり来たりしているそうです。
　Jack is going back and forth between hell and heaven still now.

　このジャックの持っているカブの明かりが、ジャックのちょうちんという意味の「ジャック・オー・ランタン」と呼ばれ、
　This turnip-made lantern Jack carries is called “Jack O' Lantern” meaning the lantern of Jack.

　今ではハロウィンの重要なアイテムとなっています。
　Now it becomes one of the necessary items for Halloween.

　また、アメリカではカブよりカボチャが一般的で、
　In America, pumpkins are popular than turnips.

　ちょうどハロウィンの時期にカボチャがたくさん取れるので、
　Besides, Halloween is around the picking season of pumpkins.

　今ではカブではなくカボチャが一般的になりました。
　That’s why, these days, people become to use pumpkins to make Jack O' Lantern instead of turnips.
