　りょうしたち が、じびきあみ を ひいて いました。
　Fishermen were pulling up a beach seine.

　かなり てごたえ が あるので、
　Because the seine weighed a great deal,

「きょう は たいりょう だぞ！」
the fishermen said, ”We captured a lot of fish today!”

と、みんな よろこんで いました。
　and they were all very delighted.

　ところが、いざ りく に あげて みると、アミ の なか には ほん の すこし の さかな しか いません。
　However, when they finished pulling up the seine to the shore, they only found a small amount of fish.

　てごたえ が あった のは、いしころ が いっぱい はいって いた から です。
　Instead of fish, they found plenty of stones, which was why the seine was heavy.

「こんな ひどい はなし が ある ものか！」
”How pathetic we are!”

　りょうしたち は くやしがりました が、ひとり の としとった りょうし が みんな に いいました。
　 The fishermen were biting their lips, but then one old fisherman said to the others,

「なあ、みんな クヨクヨ する のは やめよう。
”Hey! We better stop biting our lips.

　『よろこび は かなしみ の きょうだい』と、いう じゃないか。
　It is said that 'Joy is a brother of sorrow.'

　さっき よろこんだん だから、こんど は ふゆかいな め に あう のは とうぜん だ。
　We were delighted a while ago, and so it is no wonder that we're having an unpleasant experience now.

　でも、つぎ の こんど は よいこと が あるよ」
　But a good thing will surely happen to us soon.”



　よのなか は、そんな もの です。
　That is the way things are.

　どんな に よい おてんき でも、きゅう に あめ が ふる こと が ありますし、その はんたい も あります。
　Even if the weather is clear, it sometimes rains all of a sudden, and vice versa.

　いま が ふこう だから と いって、おちこむ ひつよう は ありません。
　Therefore, we do not have to feel depressed even if unhappy things happen to us.
