　おおきくて りっぱな モミ の き が、あしもと の イバラ を みくだして いい ました。
　A fir-tree was boasting to a bramble and said.

「おほん。わたし は よのなか の いろいろ に やく に たつ。
"Now look at me. I am useful for all sorts of things.

　たとえば、しんでん の やね や おおきな ふね を つくったり。
　for example, I am everywhere used for hall's roof or large ship.

　それに、すらっと せ が たかくて、じつ に うつくしい。
　And I am straight and tall. It makes me look very beautiful.

　まったく、いだいな モミ の き さま だ。
　Definitely, I am a great fir-tree.

　・・・おや？
　… Oh?

　わたし の あしもと に はえている おまえ は、ぜんしん が トゲトゲ で、みんな から きらわれて いる イバラ だな。
　Look at you growing on my foot, you mere thorny bramble. Everyone doesn't like you.

　おまえ に ひとつ きく が、おまえ には いったい、なん の とりえ が あるのだ？」

　すると イバラ が、こう いい ました。
　The bramble answered.

「たしか に、わたし には なん の とりえ も ありません。でも・・・」

「・・・でも、なんだ？」
"But what?"

「あっ 、ほら、ほら。
　"Oh, here, look!

　オノ を もった きこり が やってきましたよ。
　Here comes a man with an ax.

　まっすぐ こっち へ むかって きますね。
　He is coming straight toward us, isn’t he?

　わたしたち に、なに か よう でしょうか？
　What does he want from us?

　いや、わたし は トゲトゲ の きらわれもの ですから、きっと、あなた に よう でしょう。
　Well, I am a disliked thorny bramble. So he may need something from you, not me.

　にんきもの は、たいへん ですね。
　I guess being a star must be hard.

　・・・あれ？

　どうしました？
