　ロバ が、うえきや に つかわれて いました。
　The donkey was owned by a gardener.

　さんざん はたらかされる のに、たべもの は すこし しか もらえない ので、ロバ は ゼウス の かみ に、
　The gardener made the donkey work a lot but gave him little food, so the donkey asked Zeus,

「どうか、わたし が あの うえきや の ところ で はたらかない で すむ よう に、ほか の しゅじん に かえてください」
“Please change my master so I won’t have to work for the gardener anymore.”

と、おねがいしました。

　ゼウス は ロバ の ねがい を ききいれて、とうげいか に うられる こと に して やりました。
　Zeus granted his wish and sold him to a potter.

　しかし ロバ は、この いえ も また いや に なりました。
　However, the donkey also didn’t like it there.

　まえ より も こきつかわれ、ねんど や とうき を はこばされる から です。
　It was worse than before because he had to carry all the clays and pots.

　それで ロバ は、また しゅじん を かえて ください と ゼウス に おねがい して、
　Thus, the donkey asked Zeus again to change his master.

　こんど は かわなめし の しょくにん に うられました。
　He was then sold to the tannage.

　こうして ロバ は けっきょく、
　This is how the donkey

　いままで の どの しゅじん より も、ロバ を こきつかう ひと に つかわれる こと に なった の です。
　ended up with the worst master of all.

　かわなめし の しごと が わかった とき、ロバ は ためいき を ついて いいました。
　When he knew what the work of a tannage was, he said

「ああ、なんと いう こと に なって しまったん だろう。
“ Oh no, why did this happen to me?

　はじめ の ごしゅじん の ところ に いれば よかった。
　I should have stayed with my first master.

　ここに いたら、きっと じぶん の かわ まで なめされて しまう」
　If I stay here, my skin will be tanned like the others.”



　この おはなし は、
　This story says that

　めしつかい と いう もの は、いろいろな しゅじん に つかえた あと で はじめて、さいしょ の しゅじん の よさ が わかる もの だと いう こと を しめして います。
　a servant will truly understand his first master’s worth after he works for others.

　いや な せんせい や じょうし が いても、もう すこし がんばって みては？
　You shouldn’t quit right away even though you may not like your boss or your teacher.
