　ライオン と ロバ と キツネ が なかま に なって、いっしょ に かり に いきました。
　The lion, the donkey and the fox became friends and went to hunt together.

　たくさん の えもの が とれた とき、ライオン は ロバ に えもの を わけてくれ と たのみました。
　When they had large take, the lion asked the donkey to share some.

　ロバ は ぜんたい を さんとうぶん して、
　The donkey divided the game into three equal shares and said

「ライオンさん から、どうぞ ひとつ おとりなさい」
“My fellow Lion, please take your pick.”

と、いいました。

　ライオン は はら を たてて、ロバ に とびかかって くいころして しまいました。
　The Lion got furious and devoured the donkey.

　そして こんど は、キツネ に わけてくれ と たのみました。
　Then, he requested the Fox to do him the favor to make a division.

　キツネ は、くず の ような きれはし を、すこし じぶん に とった だけ で、ぜんぶ を ひとやま に して ライオン に、
　The Fox accumulated it into one large heap and left to himself a tiny piece of it.

「どうぞ、おとりなさい」
“Please help yourself.”

と、すすめました。
　He offered.

　ライオン が、
　The lion asked the fox.

「こういう わけかた を、だれ から おそわった の かね」
“Who has taught you this art of division?”

と、ききます と、キツネ は、
　Then, the fox replied.

「ロバくん の、ふこうな しにかた です」
“I learned it from the Donkey, by his tragic death."



　ひと は みじかな ひと の ふこう を みる こと に よって りこう に なる もの だと、この おはなし は おしえています。
　This story tells you that people get to learn from the misfortunes of others.

　ひと の しっぱい を みて わらう のでは なく、じぶん なら どうするか を かんがえる の です。
　If the shoe fits, wear it.
