　むかしむかし、彦一(ひこいち)と言う、とてもかしこい子どもがいました。
　Once upon a time, there was a very clever child called Hikoichi.

　ある日の事、お城から彦一のところへ、こんな知らせが届きました。
　One day, Hikoichi received the following news from the castle.

《若さまの誕生祝いをするから、庄屋(しょうや)と他に村の者を六人合わせた八人で城へ参れ。人数は、きっかり八人で来るように》
“I'm going to celebrate the birth of the prince, so come to the castle in eight people; you, the village headman and six other men from the village. You have to come exactly in eight people.”

　それを知った庄屋さんは、大喜びです。
　The village headman was overjoyed to hear of this.

「お城からお呼びがかかるとは、ありがたい事だ」
“It's a pleasure to be summoned from the castle.”

　しかし彦一は、その手紙を見ながら考えました。
　But Hikoichi thought as he looked at the letter.

「八人きっかりと、念を押しているところがあやしいな。あの殿さまの事だ、また何か企んでいるに違いないぞ」
“It's doubtful that he's reminded me to come exactly in eight people. With that lord, he must be up to something again.”

　さて、お城へ行く日になりました。
　Now it's time to go to the castle.

　彦一と庄屋さんは、村人の六人と一緒に言いつけ通りの八人でお城に向かいました。
　Hikoichi and the village headman, along with six of the villagers, headed for the castle with the eight of them as they were told.

　庄屋さんと彦一以外の六人は、生れて初めて入るお城に緊張しています。
　Other than the village headman and Hikoichi, the six of them are nervous about entering the castle for the first time in their lives.

「お城では、どんなごちそうが出るんだろう？」
“What kind of feast do they serve at the castle?”

「おら、ごちそうの食べ方なんて、知らねえぞ」
“Hey, I don't know how to eat a feast.”

「おらもだ。失礼があったら、どうしよう？」
“Me too. What if I'm rude?”

　すると、彦一が言いました。
　Hikochi said,

「大丈夫。庄屋さんの真似をすればいいんだよ」
“It's okay. All you have to do is imitate the village headman.”

「そうか、それもそうだな」
“Well, that is true.”

　そう言っている間に、八人はお城の大広間に通されました。
　While saying that, the eight were let through to the great hall of the castle.

　大広間では、すでに若さまのお誕生日を祝う会が始まっています。
　In the great hall, the celebration of the prince's birthday has already begun.

　正面の高いところから殿さま、奥さま、若さま、そして大勢の家来たちやお付きの人たちが並んでいます。
　From a high place in the front, there is a line of His Highness, his wife, the prince, and a large number of servants and attendants.

　その前に進み出た庄屋さんが、深々と頭を下げてあいさつをしました。
　The village headman stepped forward and bowed his head in greeting.

「若さまのお誕生日、おめでとうございます」
“Congratulations on the prince's birthday.”

「おう、参ったか。うむ、きっかり八人で来たな。わははは」
"Oh, you're here. Hmm, you come exactly in eight people. Wahahahaha.”

　殿さまの笑い声からすると、やはり何かをたくらんでいる様子です。
　From the sound of his laughter, he seemed to be up to something.

「さあ、苦しゅうないぞ。遠慮なく、こっちへ参れ。若もその方が、喜ぶからな」
"Come on, it doesn't matter. Feel free to come over here. The prince would be delighted if you do that.”

　言われて彦一たちが前に進み出ると、殿さまはニヤリと笑いながら言いました。
　With that being said, Hikoichi and the others stepped forward, and His Highness grinned and said,

「ああ、それから彦一に、注文をいたすぞ。
“Oh, and I'll command Hikoichi.

　彦一は、並んだ八人のちょうど真ん中に座る様にいたせ。
　Hikoichi has to sit in the middle of the eight people in line.

　よいな。
　Get it?

　それが出来なければ、すぐに帰るがよい」
　If you can't do that, you must leave immediately.”

　やはり彦一たちを八人で呼んだのは、殿さまのはかりごとだったのです。
　After all, it was the ploy of His Highness to call those eight people.

　家来やお付きたちはみんな飲み食いを止めて、彦一がどうするかと見つめました。
　The servants and attendants all stopped drinking and eating and stared at Hikochi to see what he would do.

　人数が五人とか七人とか九人だったら、ちょうど真ん中に座る事が出来ます。
　If there are five, seven, or nine people, he can sit right in the middle.

　けれど八人では、そうはいきません。
　But with eight people, it is impossible.

「あの小僧。知恵者だと評判だが、どうするつもりだろう？」
“The kid. He has a reputation for being a wise boy, but what is he going to do about it?”

「しかし殿さまも、お人が悪い。八人ではどう考えても、真ん中に座れないではないか」
“But His Highness is malicious. No matter how I think about it, he can't sit in the middle of the eight people in line.”

　それを聞いた庄屋さんは、彦一のそでを引いて言いました。
　When the village headman heard this, he pulled on Hikoichi's sleeve and said,

「彦一。八人ではどう考えても、真ん中に座るのは無理だ。ここは、謝って帰ろう」
"I don't know what to do, Hikoichi. No matter how I think about it, it's impossible to sit in the middle. Let's just apologize and get out of here.”

　でも彦一は、ニッコリ笑って殿さまに言いました。
　But Hikoichi grinned and said to His Highness,

「殿さま。わたしが真ん中に座れば、どのような座り方をしてもいいのですか？」
“Your Highness, if I sit in the middle, is every way of sitting allowed?”

「ああ、良いとも。ただし、上に重なったりしては駄目だ」
“Oh, that’s fine. But you can't be stacked on top of them.”

「承知しました」
“Yes, sir.”

　彦一は振り返ると、庄屋さんや村人たちに言いました。
　Hikoichi turned around and said to the village headman and the villagers,

「みんなでわたしを囲んで、丸く座って下さいな」
“I hope you will all sit around me in a circle.”

　みんなは言われた通り彦一を中心(ちゅうしん)にして、丸く車座(くるまざ→輪になって座る事)に座りました。
　Everyone sat in a circle with Hikoichi in the center, just as they were told.

　これなら七人でも八人でも、ちゃんと真ん中に座る事が出来ます。
　With this, he can sit in the middle of the seven or eight people in line properly.

　それを見た殿さまは、思わず手を叩いて言いました。
　Seeing this, His Highness clapped his hands and said,

「うむ、あっぱれ！　彦一よ、この勝負はそちの勝ちじゃ！」
“Hmmm, well done! Hikoichi, this game is a win for you!”

　殿さまの言葉に、家来も庄屋さんたちも大喜びです。
　The villagers, servants and the village headman were delighted by the words of the lord.


　こうして彦一のとんちのおかげで、庄屋さんたちみんなはおいしいごちそうにありつける事が出来たのです。
　In this way, thanks to Hikoichi's wit, the village headman and villagers were able to have a delicious meal.
