　むかしむかし、彦一(ひこいち)と言う、とてもかしこい子どもがいました。
　Once upon a time, there was a very clever child called Hikoichi.


　彦一の家には、生き傘(かさ)と呼ばれる不思議(ふしぎ)な傘があるとのうわさが流れました。
　There was a rumor that there was a mysterious umbrella called a living umbrella in Hikichi's house.

　何でも雨が降ると傘が自然に開き、雨がやむと自然に閉じるというのです。
　When it rains, the umbrella opens naturally, and when it stops raining, it closes naturally.

　そのうわさはどんどん広まって、とうとうお城の殿さまの耳にも届きました。
　The rumor spread so fast that it finally reached the ears of the king of the castle.

「ほう。それほど珍しい傘なら、ぜひ手に入れたい」
"Wow. If it's such a rare umbrella, I'd love to get it."

　殿さまはさっそく彦一の家に使いを出しましたが、彦一はそれを断りました。
　His Highness immediately sent a servant to Hikoichi's house to obtain the umbrella, but Hikoichi refused it.

「この生き傘は我が家の家宝で、家族も同然です。いくら殿さまでも、おゆずりするわけにはいきません」
"This living umbrella is an heirloom and a part of our family. I don't care if you're a lord, but I can't let you have it." Hikoichi said.


　使いの家来からその事を聞いた殿さまは、生き傘がますます欲しくなりました。
　His Highness heard about it from the servant, and wanted the living umbrella more.

　そこで殿さまは彦一をお城に呼ぶと、こう言いました。
　So, His Highness called Hikoichi to the castle and said,

「彦一よ。その傘を大切にするゆえ、どうか売ってくれまいか。値は、お前の言い値で良いぞ」
"Hikoichi, Since I'm eager to have that umbrella, please sell it to me. I can give you any amount and I'll value it."

「・・・・・・」
"・・・・・・"

　 彦一は少し考えると、殿さまに言いました。
　Hikoichi thought for a moment and then said to his highness.

「わかりました。お世話になっている殿さまのご希望ですし、貧乏な我が家にいるよりもお城で暮らす方が生き傘も幸せでしょう」
“I understand. It's your highness's wish, , and I'm sure my living umbrella would be happier living in a castle than staying in a poor house.”

　こうして彦一は、生き傘と引き替えに殿さまから大金をもらいました。
　Thus, Hikoichi received a large sum of money from his highness in exchange for a living umbrella.


　さて、殿さまは彦一から生き傘を手に入れたものの、この頃はお天気続きで少しも雨が降りません。
　Now, although his highness got a living umbrella from Hikoichi, the weather has been so fine these days and it hasn't rained a bit.

　はやく雨が降って傘が開くところを見たいと、殿さまも家来たちも毎日イライラしていました。
　His Highness and his servants were frustrated every day, hoping to see it rain soon and see the umbrella open.


　そして彦一から傘を手に入れて十日後、ついに念願(ねんがん)の雨が降ってきました。
　Ten days after his Highness got the umbrella from Hikoichi, it finally started to rain, which was their longing.

「よし、いよいよ生き傘が開くぞ」
“Okay, the umbrella is going to open.”

　殿さまや家来たちは生き傘をじっと見つめましたが、生き傘はなかなか開きません。
　His Highness and his servants stared at the umbrella, but it was hard to open it.

「・・・どうしたのじゃ？　雨が足りぬのか？」
"...what's wrong? Isn't it raining enough?”

　やがて雨は大雨となりましたが、しかしいくら雨が降っても傘はいっこうに開きません。
　Eventually, it started to rain heavily, but no matter how much it rained, the umbrella would not open.

「なぜじゃ？　なぜ開かぬ。・・・だれか、彦一を呼んで参れ！」
“What's happening? Why don't you open?...Someone call Hikoichi and come!”

　殿さまは彦一を呼びつけると、カンカンに怒って言いました。
　His Highness called out to Hikoichi and said angrily.

「このうそつきめ！　雨が降ったのに、傘はいっこうに開かんではないか！」
”You're a liar! It's raining and the umbrella doesn't even open!”

「あれ？　おかしいですね。今日の雨なら、生き傘は大きく開くはずですが。・・・ちょっと、生き傘を見せてもらえませんか？」
"What? It's funny. If it's raining today, the living umbrella should be wide open. ...Hey, can I see your living umbrella?"

　彦一は生き傘のところへ行くと、悲しそうな顔をして殿さまにたずねました。
" Hikoichi went to the living umbrella and asked his highness with a sad look on his face. "

「かわいそうに、こんなにやせてしまって。・・・殿さま。この傘に、何か食べ物は与えましたか？」
“'You poor thing, you've lost so much weight. ...Your Highness. Have you given this umbrella any food?”

「なに？　それは、どういう意味だ？」
“What? What do you mean by that?”

「おおっ、やっぱり！
“Oh, I knew it!

　殿さま、この生き傘は、うえ死にしています。
　Your Highness, this umbrella is dying.

　傘とはいえ、この傘は生きているのですよ。
　Even though it is an umbrella, this umbrella is alive and well.

　生きているものには、必ず食い物がいります。
　Everything that is alive has to have food.

　注意しなかったわたしも悪かったですが、お城にはこれだけの人がいて、誰もその事に気づかなかったのですか？
　I'm sorry I didn't pay attention, but were there any people in the castle who noticed?

　・・・生き傘よ、許しておくれ。
　...living umbrella, forgive me.

　せめて、立派な葬式をしてやるからな」
　At the very least, I'll give you a nice funeral.”

　彦一はそう言って、ワンワンと泣き出しました。
　Hikochi said that and began to sob and cry.

“・・・・・・”

「・・・・・・」
“・・・・・・”

　殿さまも家来たちも、これには返す言葉がありませんでした。
　His Highness and his servants had no words to say in response.
