　メスネコ が、うつくしい にんげん の わかもの に こい を しました。
　A female cat fell in love with a beautiful and young human male.

　でも、ネコ の ままでは あいて に してもらえない ので、アフロディテ の めがみ に おねがい しました。
　However, as a female cat,? she thought it would be impossible to expect love from him in return. Then she asked the goddess Aphrodite:

「どうぞ、わたし を にんげん の おんな に して下さい」
”Please transfigure me into a human female.”

　アフロディテ は あわれ に おもって、この ネコ を きれいな むすめ に してやりました。
　Aphrodite felt sorry, and transfigured the cat into a human female.

　そして、いいました。
　Then she said to the cat,

「すがたかたち は にんげん に なりました が、せいかく まで は、わたし には かえる こと が できません。
”I can change your figure into a human female, but I cannot change your nature as a cat.

　がんばって、にんげん の せいかく に なるのですよ」
　Do your best to change your nature into the one as a human.”

「わかりました。かならず、にんげん の せいかく に なります」
The cat replied, “Yes, I will definitely do it.”

　そして にんげん に なった メスネコ は、にんげん の わかもの の ところ へ いきました。
　The female cat, whose figure was totally a human female, went out to see the human male.

　わかもの は この むすめ を みると、すぐ に すき に なって、じぶん の いえ に つれていって けっこん しました。
　As soon as the human male looked at her, he fell in love with her instantly, and took her home. They got married shortly after.


　ふたり が いっしょ の へや で すんでいる とき、
　While they lived together,

　アフロディテ は ネコ が すがたかたち だけ でなく、せいかく まで ちゃんと にんげん の おんな に なったかどうか たしかめよう と して、いっぴき の ネズミ を その へや に しのびこませました。
　Aphrodite secretly dumped in a mouse to see if the female cat's nature had changed to the one as a human female.

　すると ネコ は、にんげん の すがた に なっている こと を すっかり わすれて、ネズミ を おいかけました。
　When she found the mouse, she unconsciously started to chase after the mouse: her nature has not changed at all.

　これ を みて アフロディテ は はら を たて、もと の ネコ の すがた に もどして しまいました。
　Aphrodite got angry at this, and transfigured her back into a cat.



　これと おなじ よう に、もともと せいかく の わるい にんげん は みかけ だけ かわっても、
　Likewise, even if evil-minded people can change their figure,

　ほんしょう は かんたん には かわらない もの です。
　their nature will not usually change so easily.
