　さんぞく が かいどう で ひとり の たびびと を ころしました が、ちかく に いた ひとびと が おいかけてきた ので、
　A bandit killed a traveler on the street. Because there were some people near the murder scene, and they started to chase the bandit,

　て が ち で ちまみれ に なったまま にげました。
　he ran away with his hands stained with blood.

　ところが、むこう から も たびびとたち が やってきて、
　However, there were travelers coming from the direction that he was running away to.

「おや、あなた の て は どうして、そんな に あかく よごれている の ですか？」と、たずねました。
”Why are your hands stained in red so much?”

と、たずねました。
One of the travelers asked him.

「いえ、なに、いま、クワ の き に のぼって、み を とっていた もの ですから」
He answered ”Well..., because I was getting mulberries on a mulberry tree a while ago.”

　クワ の み は、あかい いろ を しています。
　The color of mulberries is red.

　さんぞく が こういって ごまかして いる とき、おって の ひとたち が おいついて
　While the bandit was trying to cover up what he did, the chasers caught up with him.

　さんぞく を つかまえる と、クワ の き に しばりくび に しました。
　They caught the bandit, and then hanged him from a mulberry tree.

　そのとき、クワ の き が さんぞく に いいました。
　The mulberry tree said to the bandit.

「おまえ を しばりくび に する のに やく に たって、わたし は うれしいよ。
”I am glad to be the one that is of use to hang you

　だって、おまえ は ひと を ころした くせ に、
　because you killed a person,

　て に ついた ち を わたし の せい に した の だからね」
　and then used me as a reason to cover up your stained hands with blood.”



　うまれつき こころ の やさしい ひと でも、わるいやつ に ぬれぎぬ を きせられれば、
　Even the natural-born good would say such a harsh thing to the bad

　その あいて に たいして てきびしい こと を いったり する もの です。
　if a false charge is made against them by the bad.
