　キツネ と サル が いっしょ に たび を しながら、
　While a fox and a monkey were traveling together,

　どちら の いえがら が りっぱか に ついて、いいあらそって いました。
　they disputed about which ancestry was nobler.

　めいめい、せんぞ が どんな に えらかった と いう はなし を くどくど している うちに、ある ばしょ に さしかかりました。
　They were trying to convince each other by talking about how noble their ancestries were over and over, and in the meanwhile, came to some place.

　サル は そのあたり を ながめまわして、きゅう に なきはじめました。
　After looking around the place, the money suddenly started to cry.

「どうしたのです？」
”What's going on?”

　と、キツネ が たずねますと、
　The fox asked.

　サル は そこ に ならんで いる おはか を ゆびさして こう いいました。
　The monkey pointed at the graves in line, and answered.

「これが なかず に いられましょうか。
”How can I not cry?

　だって この おはか は、わたし の せんぞ に つかえた めしつかい や どれい たち の はか なの ですから」
　These graves are for the servants and slaves who served my ancestry.”

「へーえ、なるほど」
Then the fox said to the monkey,

と、キツネ が いいました。
”Oh, I see...

「おまえさん、つきたいだけ うそ を つく が いいさ。
　Well, you can lie all you want.

　その おはか に はいっている れんちゅう は、だれ も あそこ から でてきて、
　People who are buried under the graves cannot come out

　おまえ が うそ を ついている と いえない の だから」
　and testify that you're telling a lie.”



　うそつき は、うそ が ばれる しんぱい の ない とき ほど、
　A liar would tell a big lie

　おおぼら を ふく もの です。
　when there is no chance of being caught lying.
