　むかし、ある おとこ が、こし から うえ は にんげん で、こし から した が ヤギ の からだ と いう、はんじんはんじゅう の サチュロス と ともだち に なりました。
　A long time ago, a man befriended a satyrs, a creature that was half-human and half-beast; His upper half of his body a human and lower half of his body a goat.

　ふゆ が きて さむさ が み に しむ よう に なると、
　Winter came, and the cold started to pierce through the body.

　おとこ は りょうて を くち の ところ へ もっていって、フウーフウー いき を ふきかけました。
　The man brought his hands up his mouth and started to blow on his hands.

「どうして、そんな こと を するのかい？」
“Why are you doing that?”

と、サチュロス が たずねました。
　the satyrs asked.

　おとこは、
　The man replied,

「て が つめたい から、いき で あたためて いるんだ」
“I am warming my hands with my breath”

と、こたえました。
　(上記に訳済み)

　そのご、しょくじ が はこばれて きました。
　Then, the food was brought to them

　とても、あつい りょうり でした。
　and it was very hot.

　おとこ は すこしずつ とりわけて、くち の ところ へ もっていって、フウーフウー いき を ふきかけました。
　The man brought the food close to his mouth and started to blow on the food.

「どうして、そうする の かい？」
“Why are you doing that?”

と、また サチュロス が たずねました。
　the satyrs asked again.

「あんまり あつい から、いき で さまして いるんだ」
“I am trying to cool the food because it is too hot”

と、おとこ は こたえました。
　the man answered.

　すると サチュロス は、
　Then the satyrs said,

「いやはや、なんて こと だ。ぼくは、きみ の ともだち を やめるよ。
“Oh my, I have to stop being friends with you.

　おなじ くち から あつさ と つめたさ を はきだす なんて、そんな ひと と ともだち に なって は いられないよ」
　I cannot be friends with a being that spouts heat and cold from the same mouth.



　わたしたち も、えたい の しれない ひと とは ともだち に ならない よう に しましょう。
　We shouldn’t be friends with strangers.
