　ながい みちのり を あるいてきた たびびと が、
　A traveler wearied from a long journey,

　へとへと に つかれて いど の そば に たおれこんで ねむって しまいました。
　lay down from fatigue, nearby a well.

　もうすこし で いど の なか に ずりおちそう に なった とき、
　Just as he was about to fall into the water,

　うんめい の めがみ が きて たびびと を ゆりおこしながら いいました。
　Dame Fortune appeared, woke him and said,

「これこれ、こんな こと を していて いど に おちたら、
"Good Sir, if you fall into the well,

　あなた は じぶん の ふちゅうい は たな に あげて、わたし の せい に する に きまっている でしょう」
　then you are sure to start blaming on me, even though it was derived from your own carelessness.



　うんめい の めがみ の いうとおり、
　As Dame Fortune said,

　たいてい の ひと は じぶん が わるかった ために ふこう に なっても、かみさま の せい に してしまう もの です。
　Most people tend to look for God to blame, even if their misfortune was brought by themselves.
