　あるひと が イタチ を ワナ で つかまえて しばりあげ、
　A man captured a weasel with a trap, and tied it up.

　みず の はいっている つぼ に いれて おぼれさせようと しました。
　Then he tried to drown the weasel by putting it into a crock filled with water.。

　ところが、イタチ が いいました。
　However, the weasel said,

「なんて ひどいめ に あわせるのです。
“What a horrible thing you're trying to do to me!

　ネズミ だの トカゲ だの つかまえて、あなた の ため に なって いるのに」
　You benefit from mice and even lizards.”

　すると、ひと が いいました。
　Then the man answered back,

「それは、おまえ の いうとおりだ。
“Yeah, what you're saying is right.

　だが、ニワトリ を みんな しめころしたり、いえじゅう を あらしたり、にく の いれもの を あけたりして、
　But they are also doing lots of bad things such as chocking off chickens, messing up houses all over, and opening meat containers.

　ため に なる こと より も、わるいこと を たくさん する から ころして やるのだ」
　They do lots of bad things rather than good things, so that's why I'm killing you.”



　よいこと は すこし しか せず に、わるいこと は たくさん する。
　To those who consider themselves good people

　でも、じぶん では よい にんげん だと おもっている ひと に、この おはなし を すると よい でしょう。
　despite doing far more bad things than good things, this story is worth while to tell.
