　はたらきもの の みぼうじん が、わかい おんなたち を めしつかい と して やとっていました。
　A hardworking widow had hired some young women as her maids.

　あさ くらいうちに ニワトリ が とき を つげると、
　When it was still dark outside in the early morning and rooster crowed,

　おんなしゅじん は めしつかい を たたきおこして、せっせと はたらかせる の でした。
　the female master would wake the maids up and forced them to work.

　めしつかい は、いつも へとへと に つかれて いました。
　The maids were always exhausted.

「こんなに わたしたち が くたびれる のは、あの にくらしい ニワトリ の せいだわ。
　The maids thought, “The reason why we get exhausted is because of the rooster.

　あれが よる の あけないうち から ごしゅじん を おこす から いけないのよ」
　It always wakes the master up even before the morning.”

と、めしつかいたち は かんがえて、ニワトリ を ころしてしまう こと に しました。
　and decided to kill the rooster.

　ところが この けいかく を じっこうして ニワトリ を ころして しまう と、
　So they carried out this plan and killed the rooster,

　かえって まえ より も ひどい こと に なりました。
　but the things got even worse.

と、いう のは、おんなしゅじん は ニワトリ の こえ で じかん を しること が できなくなった ために、
　It’s because the rooster no longer told the female master the time to wake up,

　もっと はやく から めしつかいたち を おこして、はたらかせる ように なって しまった から です。
　she came to wake the maids up earlier than before forced them to work.



　この おはなし は、よい と おもって やった こと の ため に、かえって ふこう を まねく ばあい が おおい こと を おしえて います。
　This story tells you that things you thought would be good sometimes lead to misfortune.

early birdは早起きする人を指す言葉としてよく使われます。ちなみに「早起きは三文の徳」は英語で「The early bird catches (gets) the worm.(【直訳】早起きする鳥が虫を捕らえる。)」となります。
