　ある ちいさな しま に いっとう の ウシ が いて、
　There was a cow in an isle,

　にひき の コガネムシ が、その ウシ の フン を たべて くらしていました。
　and there lived two gold beetles by eating the cow's dung.

　ふゆ が ちかづいた あるひ、
　One day, when the winter was around the corner,

　いっぴき の コガネムシ が、もう いっぴき の コガネムシ に いいました。
　one of the gold beetles said to the other,

「ぼく は、むこう の りくち へ わたろう と おもうんだ。
“I'll go over to the land across this isle.

　ぼく が いなければ、きみ は ふたりぶん の フン が たべられる からね。
　Because if I leave the isle, you can eat the dung that I would be eating.

　ぼく は あっち で ふゆ を すごして くるよ。
　So I will spend the winter over there.

　そして もし、あの りくち に たべもの が たくさん あったら、
　If there is a lot of food over there,

　かえり に きみ に もってきて あげよう」
　I'll bring some back for you.”

　こう やくそく して、いっぴき の コガネムシ は りく に わたりました。
　Then after making this promise, he left the isle.

　ついて みると、そこには たくさん の あたらしい フン が ありました ので、
　When he got to the land, there was plenty of dung,

　そこに おちついて たっぷり たべました。
　so he got settled and ate it all he wanted.

　ふゆ が すぎる と、もと の しま に かえって きました。
　After the winter, he returned to the isle,

　しま に のこって いた ともだち の コガネムシ は、たずねました。
　then the other gold beetle that remained in the isle and waited for his friend's return asked,

「やあ、きみ は、ずいぶん ふとって、げんきそう に なったね。
“You've gained so much weight, and look so well.

　あっち に ごちそう が たくさん あったら、ぼく に もってきてくれる と いっていた けれど、
　You said that you would bring some food back for me if there was a lot over there,

　おみやげ は どうしたんだい？」
　so I'm wondering what the situation was like over there. Was there a lot of food there?”

　そして、おみやげ が ない こと が わかると、
　Once he found out that there was no food for him,

「ひどいじゃないか」
he got angry and said,  “How could you do that to me?”

と、おこりました。

　すると あいて は、
　Then the other gold beetle said,

「うらむなよ。
“Don't blame me.

　じつ は ね、あっち の りくち では、いる あいだ は いくら でも たべる こと が できる けど、
　To tell you the truth, it is okay to eat all we want while we stay there,

　なに ひとつ そと へ もちだす こと は できない こと に なって いるんだ」
　but we're not supposed to take any food out.”

と、すまして いいました。
　He said this primly.



　ともだち に しんせつ そうな かお を していても、じっさい には ともだち の ため には なに も して やらない ひと に、
　This story is the one for those who pretend to be kind to friends,

　この おはなし を きかせて やる と よいでしょう。
　but do not take any actions for them.
