　むかしむかし、いちわ の ワシ が かり を していました。
　Once upon a time, there was an eagle that was hunting.

　ワシ は たかい いわ の うえ から、さーっ と まいおりた かと おもうと、
　The eagle flew from the top of the high rock so swiftly,

　こヒツジ を するどい つめ で がっちり と つかみ、あっと いう ま に つれさって しまいました。
　and grabbed a baby sheep with his sharp nails tightly in no time, then flew off.

「かっこいいなぁ」
“Cool!”

　その ワシ の ようす を、いちわ の カラス が うっとり みていました。
　A crow that saw the eagle flew off with the baby sheep thought, and said to himself,

「ぼく も あんな ふう に かり を するんだ。
“I'll hunt like the eagle did.

　せこせこ と き の み を つつく なんて、もう やめた」
　I'm fed up with pecking nuts over and over again.”

　カラス は さっそく、ワシ の まね を しました。
　Then the crow started to hunt like the eagle.

　つぱさ を ひろげ、ビュッ と おおきな はね の おと を たてて えもの を ねらい ました。
　With his wings wide open and making a sharp wing sound, the crow tried to hunt a prey.

「どうせ なら、ワシ が つかまえた の より おおきな ヒツジ を つかまえて やろう。
He thought, “If I hunt a prey, why don't I hunt one that's bigger than what the eagle hunted.

　あんな ふう に ガシッ と ふかく つめ を たててれば、ヒツジ なんか かるい もんさ」
　If I use my nails like the eagle did, it will be a piece of cake to pick up a sheep.”

　カラス は ヒツジ の むれ の なか で、いちばん よく ふとっている ヒツジ の せなか に とびつき ました。
　In the crowd of sheep, the crow aimed at the fattest sheep, and tried to grab it on the back.

　しかし ヒツジ は おもすぎて、カラス には とても もちあげられません。
　However, the sheep was too heavy for the crow to pick up.

「しかたがない、こヒツジ で がまん するか」
The crow thought, “I can't help it. Well, a baby sheep will do anyway.”

　カラス は、とびあがろう と しました。
　Then he tried to fly off with the baby sheep,

　でも、いくら ちから いっぱい はばたいても、
　but no matter how hard he tried,

　つめ が ヒツジ の まきげ に からまって、
　he could not fly

　うごく こと が できません。
　because his nails were tangled in the curly sheep hair.

　バタバタ と もがいている うちに、とうとう カラス は ヒツジかい の おとこ に つかまって しまい
　While the crow was struggling to fly off somehow, he was captured by a sheepherder,

　はね を きられて しまいました。
　and his wings were cut off by the sheepherder.

　さっそく ヒツジかい の こどもたち が、この ようす を み に あつまって きました。
　In the meantime, the sheepherder's children came to see what had been happening.

　ひとり の こども が、たずねました。
　Then one of the children asked,

「おとうさん、この とり は なんて いう とり なの？」
“Daddy, what's this bird called?”

　すると ヒツジかい は、わらいながら こたえました。
　The sheepherder answered smilingly,

「おとうさん は、こいつ は どうみても カラス だと おもうんだ。
“I think this looks nothing but a crow by any means.

　でも こいつ は、じぶん の こと を ワシ だと おもっている みたい だね」
　But it seems like this crow thinks he's an eagle.”



　じつりょく も ない のに ひと の まね を しよう と しても、けっして かんたん には うまく いきません。
　Even if we try to imitate others regardless of not owning their abilities, things will never go well easily.

　それ ばかり か、この カラス の よう に、みんな に わらわれて しまう と いう おはなし でした。
　Not only that, it will also end up making such a fool of ourselves like this crow.
