Poison Candy

　むかしむかし、いっきゅうさん と いう、とんち で ひょうばん の こぞうさん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a well known priest apprentice boy named Ikkyu.

　あるひ の こと。
　It all started one day.

　おしょうさん が、むらびと に みずアメ を もらいました。
　Oshou the head priest had received some candy syrup.

　それ を ほしそうな め で みていた いっきゅうさん に、おしょうさん が こわい かお で いいました。
　Ikkyu saw the candy with desire filled eyes, but was told by Oshou.

「いっきゅうよ。これはな、おとな が たべる と くすり じゃが、こども が たべる と たちまち しんでしまう と いう、おそろしい どく の みずアメ じゃ
"Ikkyu、now listen you here, this is medicine for adults, if any child should try to eat this then they will immediately drop down dead, this is terrible poison candy.

　けっして たべては いかんぞ」
　By all means, you must never taste it!"

　すると いっきゅうさん は、ニッコリ わらって、
　Whereupon, Ikkyu smiled to himself

「はい、ぜったい に たべません」
"Yes, I definitely wont eat it."

と、いいました。
　Replied Ikkyu.

「そうか、そうか」
"Good, good" said the priest.

　おしょうさん は それ を きいて、あんしん して ようじ に でかけました。
　After hearing these words, Oshou went off on his errands with peace of mind.

　おしょうさん が いなくなった こと を しった いっきゅうさん は、
　As soon as Ikkyu knew that Oshou was gone.

「えっへへへ。こども が たべる と どく だ なんて、よく いうよ。
"Hahahaha ,to have the cheek to say that if a child eats it he will be poisoned?

　みずアメ を ひとりじめ しよう だ なんて、そう は いかないよ」
　It's not right to take all the candy for yourself you know."

と、さっそく ほか の こぞうさん と みずアメ を わけあって、すべて たべて しまった の です。
　So, there at once, he divided all the candy syrup between the other boy priests and they then proceeded to eat it all up.

「ああ、おいしかった」
"Oh, that was delicious."

「でも いっきゅう。こんな こと を して、おしょうさん に しかられないか？」
"But Ikkyu, to do such a thing, won't Oshou scold us all?”

　しんぱい する ほか の こぞうさん に、いっきゅうさん は ニッコリ わらう と。
　To the other worried boys, Ikkyu just smiled and said.

「だいじょうぶ、だいじょうぶ。いっきゅう に、よい かんがえ が あります。じつ は ですね・・・」
"It's alright, Ikkyu has a very good plan ready. Well, as a matter of fact..."



　さて、それから しばらく して、おしょうさん が ようじ を すませて かえってくる のが みえました。
　Well, a little while after that , Oshou could be seen coming back from finishing his errands.

　すると いっきゅうさん は おしょうさん の たいせつ に していた ちゃわん を もちだして、
　Ikkyu then proceeded to pick up Oshou's most valued tea cup.

　それ を にわ の いし に ガシャン！　と、ぶつけて わって しまいました。
　He then smashed it hard on a rock in the garden. and it was broken into pieces.

　そして めもと を つば で ぬらす と、みんな で なきまね を しました。
　Then, all the boys wetted their eyes with spit and began to pretend to cry.

「えーん、えーん」
"Waah,waah"

　かえってきた おしょうさん は、みんな が ないている ので ビックリ。
　When Oshou got back he was very surprised to see everyone crying.

「こりゃ、なに を ないて おるのじゃ？　いっきゅう、これ は どうした こと だ？」
"Hey, what are you all crying about?　Ikkyu, what is this all about -- ?"

　すると いっきゅうさん が、なきながら いいました。
　Thereupon, Ikkyu explained while shedding tears.

「えーん、えーん。おしょうさん の・・・。おしょうさん の たいせつな ちゃわん を、わって しまいました。
“Oh, Oshou...We broke your most precious teacup.

　おわび に どく の みずアメ を なめて しのう と おもいました が、ぜんぶ なめて も しねません。えーん、えーん」
　To make up for what we had done, we tried to taste the poison candy and die, but even though we ate it all up we did not die,　waaah, waaah"

　それ を きいた おしょうさん は、あたま を ポリポリ かきながら、
　After hearing this, Oshou scratched his head and said,

「こりゃ、してやられたわ」
"Damn, I have been deceived."

と、いい、それから は むらびと に もらった おかし は、みんな で わける こと に した の です。
　And now, whenever the priest receives sweets from the villagers, then it is always divided between everyone.
