　ちょうない の わかいもの が に、さんにん よりあつまって、おしゃべり を しています と、やせた あおじろい かお の おとこ が、
　One day a group of boys were gathered together in their neighborhood talking, when a thin man with a white face appeared.

「はあー、はあー」
"No-, no-"

と、いき を きらせて とびこんで きました。
　The man then ran into the boys out of breath.

「たっ、たっ、たすけてくれ〜」
"He he heeeelllp me -"

　おとこ は、ガタガタ と ふるえて おります。
　The man trembled and shook.

「どうした、どうした」
"What is it, what is it-- " Asked the boys.

　みんな が おとこ を とりかこんで ききます と、おとこ は、
　The boys surrounded the man and listened to his story.

「うしろ から、まんじゅううり が やってくる」
"behind me, the dumpling seller is coming. ."

「・・・・・・？」
"....?"

「じつ は、おれ は まんじゅう が どうして も こわくて こわくて。はっ、はやく、どこか へ かくしてくれ」
"Well, the fact is, I’m just terrified of dumplings.　Hhh hide. I must hide somewhere quickly."

と、いう ので、ひとまず ものおき に かくして やりました が、いたずらずき の ひとり が、
　The man ,then for the time being decided to hide in a nearby storeroom. But there was a boy who liked playing tricks on people.

「どうも おかしな やつ だ。ひとつ、いたずら を して やろう じゃないか」
"What a strange fellow that man is. I think I will play a trick on him."

　さっそく まんじゅうや から まんじゅう を かい、おぼん に やまもり に つんで ものおき の なか へ いれる と、と を ぴしゃり と しめて おさえていました。
　Straightaway, the mischievous boy went to the local shop and bought some dumplings, then piled them high onto a tray pushed them into the storeroom and closed the door shut from outside .

　ところが しばらく たっても、おと ひとつ しません。
　However, after some time had passed , still no sound could be heard from inside .

「さて は こわがって、き を うしなった かな？」
"Well, I wonder. Maybe he was so scared that he fainted?"

と、と を あけて みると、なか の おとこ は まんじゅう を のこらず たべて しまい、くち の まわり の あんこ を べろべろ なめて います。
　When the boy opened the door, the man inside was licking sweet dumpling paste from his lips, and not even one dumpling had been left.

「あれっ？　おまえ を おどかして やろう と おもった のに くっちまう とは、どこ が こわいんだ」
"I thought I could scare you, but you’ve eaten up all the dumplings. What was so scary about them then?"

と いう と、おとこ は、
　After saying this ,the man replied,

「こんど は、おちゃ が こわい、おちゃ が こわい」
"Tea, Tea , I’m also afraid of tea."
