　むかし、ある やま の むら に、とても すなおな むすめ が いました。
　Once upon a time, there was a very honest girl in a village in a mountain.


　あるとき、この むすめ の ところ に となり の むら から つかい が きて、
　One day, a bearer from a neighboring village came to the girl.

「ぜひ、およめ に もらいたい」
“I want this girl to marry me,”

との、ことです。
he said.

　むすめ の おっかさん は、
　The girl’s mother thought,

「こんな けっこう な はなし は、またと あるもんでない」
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we can’t miss.”

と、さっそく むすめ を よんで、いいきかせました。
　She called her daughter at once and said,

「いいかい。
“Look.

　およめ に いって しばらく の あいだ は、もらってきた ばかり の ネコ みたい に、おとなしく しているんだよ」
　For a while after you marry into his family, stay calm like a cat which just came to a new house.”

「うん、わかった。ネコ みたい に しておれば、いいんだな」
“OK. I’ll act like a cat.”

　むすめ が だいどころ を ながめる と、よそ から もらって まもない みけネコ が、かまど の かま の ふた の うえ で、こっくりこっくり と ねていました。
　When the girl looked around the kitchen, a calico cat which their family had just gotten from someone was dozing off on the cover of the furnace.

　さて、むすめ は まもなく およめいり を すませて、おむこさん の いえ で くらすように なりました。
　Before long, the girl got married and started living in her husband’s house.

　よめいり の、つぎ の あさ の ことです。
　On the next day of the marriage,

　むすめ は だれより も はやく おきて かまど に ひ を つけ、ごはん を たきはじめました。
the girl who got up the earliest out of everybody put a fire into the furnace to cook rice.

　そのうちに、
　Meanwhile, she thought,

「そうだ。ネコ みたいに しておらねば」
“Oh, yes. I have to act like a cat.”

と、かま の ふた の うえ に あがって、おすわり を しました。
　She went up to the cover of the furnace and sat on it.

　そこに、おしゅうとめさん が、
　Then her mother-in-law came to the kitchen.

「もっと ゆっくり、ねてりゃあ いいに」
“You could’ve slept more,”

と、ねぼけまなこ で、やってきました。
she said with her sleepy eyes.

　みると およめさん が、かま の ふた の うえ に すわっています。
　She was surprised to find her daughter-in-law sitting on the cover of the furnace.

「あら！　そんな ところ に あがって、なに を しているんだい？」
　She asked, “Holy cow! What are you doing up there?”

　おしゅうとめさん が びっくりして きく と、むすめ は て で かお を なでまわしながら、
　Then her mother-in-law stroked her face with her hand and mimicked a cat.

「ニャゴ、ニャゴ、ニャァーン」
“Meow, meow, meow,”

と、かわいらしく へんじ を したのですが、きみがわるい と そのひ の うち に おいかえされて しまいました。
　she prettily replied to her mother-in-law, but she was kicked out of the house within the day because she was thought to be creepy.

　bearerは伝言やうわさなどを伝える人、伝達者の意味です。
　calico catはアメリカ英語で三毛猫を指します。
