　びじん とは おせじ にも いえない おんな が、ていしゅ の うわき で くろう を して、ポックリ と しんでしまいました。
　A woman way less than flattering had a hard time with her husband’s affair and dropped dead.

　じごく の オニたち が おんな を えんまだいおう の ところ に つれていくと、
　When devils in the hell took the dead woman to the Great King Yama, she said,

「えんまさま に、おねがい が ございます。
“I have a favor to ask, the Great King Yama.

　なにとぞ わたし を ゆうれい に して、しゃば へ かえらせてください。
　Please turn me into a ghost and let me go back to the earth.

　にくい ていしゅ に たたって やらねば、しんでも しにきれません！」
　Unless I get back at my nasty husband, I can’t die!”

　えんまだいおう は、これ を きく と、
　The Great King Yama listened to her and said,

「しかしなあ。むかし から ゆうれい は、びじん が なるもの と きまっておる。
“But traditionally, only beautiful ladies can become a ghost.

　きもちち は わかる が、その かお では むりじゃ」
　I know how you feel but you can’t be a ghost with your ugly face.”

「そっ、そんなあ・・・」
“Oh, no…”

　おんな が おちこんで いると、きのどく に おもった オニたち が おんな に みみうち を しました。
　The devils felt sorry for this disappointed woman and whispered to her,

「おい。ゆうれい ではなく、ばけもの に してもらえ、ばけもの に」
“Hey, maybe you should ask the Great King Yama to turn you into a monster, not a ghost.”

　それ を きいた えんまだいおう が いいました。
　The Great King Yama heard it and said,

「よし、ばけもの と してなら、その ねがい を かなえて やろう」
“Right. If it’s ok with you, I can turn you into a monster.”

「ほんとう ですか？
“Are you sure?

　このさい、ばけもの でも なん でも かまいません。
　I don’t mind being a monster or whatever.

　いいえ、どうせ なら、ものすごい かお の ばけもの に してください。
　I mean, I’m willing to be a monster with a very spooky face.

　その ほう が、ていしゅ を おどろかす こと が できるでしょう」
　That will be scarier to my husband.”

「うむ、まかせておけ。
“All right. You can count on me.

　とびっきり、ものすごい かお の ばけもの に してやる。
　I’ll turn you into a monster with a very spooky face.

　・・・それでは いくぞー。えい！」
　Let’s begin. Go!”

　えんまだいおう の かけごえ と ともに、おんな は じぶん の いえ に もどって いました。
 Soon after the Great King Yama called out, the woman returned to her home.

（よし、ていしゅ に うらみ を はらすぞ。・・・しかし、どんな ばけもの に なったんだろう？）
　She thought, “Ok, let’s get back at him… but I wonder how I look.”

　おんな は き に なり、もっていた てかがみ で じぶん の かお を みてみました。
　As she wanted to see herself, she looked at her face in her hand mirror.

「・・・！！」
“…!!”

　なんと そこ に うつって いたのは、いままでどおり の じぶん の かお だったのです。
　She was surprised to see herself with her face as it was before.
