　むかしむかし、カメ は とても あし が ながくて せ の たかい どうぶつ でした。
　A long time ago, the tortoise once had very long legs and was very tall animal.

　あるひ の こと、けものたち が あつまって ちからくらべ を はじめました。
　One day, animals got together and they started a competition to see who was the strongest.

　そのころ、ちから が いちばん つよかった のは イノシシ です。
　In those days, the boar was the strongest of all.

　だから イノシシ は いつも おおいばり で、ちからくらべ の ばしょ に くると、
　He puffed himself up with his strength all the time, and when he came to the competition,

「エヘン、エヘン」
“Ahem! Ahem!”

と、えらそう に していました。
　He acted as if he was a big animal.

　さあ、これ を みて くやしくなった カメ は、じぶん も イノシシ の まね を して、
　It made the tortoise so frustrated. So he coughed

「エヘン、エヘン」
“Ahem! Ahem!”

と、やりました。
to pretend like the boar.

　これ を きく と、イノシシ は ますます おおきな こえ を だして、
　As soon as the boar heard the sound of his coughing,

「エヘッン！　エヘッン！」
“Ahem!! Ahem!!”

と、やりました。
　He coughed louder in return.

　すると、カメ も まけじ と、
　Then the tortoise coughed much louder,

「エッへーン！　エッヘーン！」
“Ahem!! Ahem!!”

　イノシシ も まけじ と、
　And then the boar emulously tried to outdo the tortoise,

「エッヘーン！！！　エッヘーン！！！」
“Ahem!!! Ahem!!!”

　ふたり は にらみあいました が、カメ が いいました。
　They glared at one another for a while, and then the tortoise said,

「イノシシくん、ちょっと たずねるが」
“By the way, my friend boar.”

「なんだい」
“Now what?”

　イノシシ が、ながい くび を カメ に むけました。
　The boar twisted his long neck to look at the tortoise.

　そのころ の イノシシ は いま と ちがって、とても くび が ながい どうぶつ だったのです。
　At that time, the boar had a very long neck, different from now.

「きみ は、すこし ばかり ちから が あるのが じまん なんだそうだね。
“I heard you boast yourself to be a little bit stronger than others.

　・・・まあ、ぼく には かなわない だろうけど」
　Well, you are no match for me, though.”

　カメ が いう と、おこった イノシシ が、
　When the tortoise said so to the boar, the angry boar said to him,

「なんだとー！　ふみつぶして やる！」
“What did you say? I will stamp on you!”

と、カメ を こうら の うえ から おさえつけました。
and the boar held on to the tortoise’s shell.

　おさえつけられた カメ も あし を ふんばって がんばって いたのですが、イノシシ の ちから が よほど つよかった のか、
　The tortoise struggled to stay on his feet, but since the boar was so strong that

　カメ の あし が ギュギュギュー と、だんだん みじかく なって いったのです。
　the tortoise could not stay any longer and his legs gradually became shortened.

　おまけ に かたい カメ の こうら も メシメシメシー と、ヒビだらけ に なって しまいました。
　At the same time, his hard shell started to crack and soon the whole surface became all cracked.

　それ で カメ の あし は、あの ふんばった ような みじかい あし に なってしまい、
　This is the reason why the tortoise has such short legs as if he is withstanding something,

　かたい こうら も ヒビだらけ に なって しまった の です。
and has a cracked shell even though it is really hard.

「へへーん。ざまあみろ！」
“Ha-ha! Serves you right!”

　かった イノシシ は、うれしさ の あまり いきおいよく はしりだしました。
　Boar, the winner, was so much happy as to run vigorously.

　でも、よそみ を していて まえ に あった おおいわ に はげしく あたま を ぶつけて しまい、
　However, since he was looking away, he severely hit his head against the massive stone in front of him

　ギューー と、ながかった くび が ちぢんで しまいました。
and his long neck was shortened.

　それ で イノシシ の くび は、いま の よう に みじかく なって しまった の です。
　This is the reason why the boar has short neck as it is today.
