　むかしむかし、あるところ に、まじめ な クツや が いました。
　Once upon a time, there was a hardworking shoemaker.

　クツや は まいにち まじめ に はたらいて いるのに、だんだん びんぼう に なってしまい、とうとう いっそくぶん の クツ の かわ しか のこらなくなりました。
　Despite of his hard work, the shoemaker became poor and poor, and at last all he had was just enough leather to make one pair of shoes.

「ああ、これで クツ を つくるのも さいごか」
“Oh, this is going to be the last pair of shoes I can make.”

　クツや は その さいご の かわ を クツ の かたち に きって、そのひ は ねてしまいました。
　The shoemaker cut the last leather into a shoe shape and went to bed that night.


　つぎのひ の あさ、め を さました クツや は ビックリ です。
　The next morning the shoemaker woke up and was surprised at what he saw.

　なんと クツ が いっそく、ちゃん と できあがって いたのです。
　A pair of shoes had been made completely.

　その クツ は とても すばらしい でき だったので、とても たかい ねだん で うれました。
　The shoes were in such a good quality that they were sold for very high price.

　クツや は その おかね で、にそくぶん の かわ を かいました。
　With that money, the shoemaker bought leather to make two more pairs of shoes.

　そして その かわ を クツ の かたち に きった ところ で、また ねてしまいました。
　He cut the leather into a shoe shape and went to bed again.

　すると つぎのひ の あさ にも、りっぱ な クツ が にそく できあがって いました。
　The next morning, he found two pairs of beautifully made shoes.

　それから は まいにち、おなじこと が つづきました。
　Since then, the same thing happened every single day.

　にそく の クツ が よんそく に なり、よんそく が はちそく、はちそく が じゅうろくそく、じゅうろくそく が さんじゅうにそく・・・と、どんどん クツ が ふえていったのです。
　Two pairs of shoes became four pairs, four became eight, eight became sixteen, sixteen became thirty two… and kept increasing.

　おかげ で クツ屋 は、すっかり お金持ち に なりました。
　Soon the shoemaker became rich.


　あるひ、クツや は おかみさん と いっしょ に、ひとばんじゅう おきていること に しました。
　One day the shoemaker and his wife decided to stay up all night.

　だれ が あの すばらしい クツ を つくっているのか、たしかめよう と おもったのです。
　They wanted to see who had been making those fine shoes.

　よなか に なると、どこから か はだか の こびと が ふたり あらわれました。
　In the middle of the night, two naked elves appeared out of nowhere.

　ふたり の こびと は ちいさな て で すばやく かわ を ぬい、たたいて かたち を ととのえる と、あっというま に すばらしい クツ を つくりあげました。
　With the little hands, the two elves sew the leather quickly, patted it into shape, and completed fine shoes in no time.


　つぎのあさ、おかみさん が クツや に いいました。
　The wife suggested the shoemaker the next morning.

「ねえ。クツ を つくってくれた おれい に、あの こびとたち に ふく を ぬってあげよう と おもうの。
“Dear, I’m thinking to make clothes for those elves in appreciation for making beautiful shoes.

　だって はだか じゃ さむそうだもの。
　They look cold naked.

　だから あなた は、こびと に クツ を つくってあげたら」
　How about you making shoes for them?”

「そうだね。そうしよう」
“That’s a good idea. Let’s do that.”


　つぎのよる、クツや は クツ の かわ の かわり に、おかみさん が ぬった ちいさな シャツ と ズボン と チョッキ と、クツや が つくった ちいさな クツ と クツした を ふたりぶん おいておきました。
　The next evening, instead of leather to make shoes, the shoemaker left little shirts, pants, and bests that his wife made and little shoes and socks that he made for the two elves.

　すると こびとたち は おおよろこび で ふく を きて、そこらじゅう を とびはねながら うたいました。
　The elves put on the clothes with delight and sang jumping up and down.

♪これで、ぼくら は かわいい こびと。
♪We are now lovely elves.

♪もう、クツや じゃ、なくなった。
♪No longer a shoemaker.

　そして そと に でていき、そのまま にどと あらわれませんでした。
　They soon left the house and never showed up again.They soon left the house and never showed up again.

　こびと は いなくなりました が、それから も クツや の クツ は とぶように うれつづけて、クツや は しあわせ に くらすこと が できたのです。
　The elves were gone, but the shoemaker’s shoes continued to fly off the shelves, and he was able to live happily ever after.
