　むかし か らネコ は、ごはん を たべた あと で かお や て を なめて あらいます。
　From ancient times, cats lick their faces and hands to keep them clean after meals.

　ふつう なら ごはん を たべる まえ に あらう の でしょうが、なぜ そうしない の でしょうか？
　Unlike us, why don’t they wash before meal?

　それには、こんな わけ が あるのです。
　The following story explains why.



　むかしむかし、いちわ の スズメ が、おひゃくしょう の うらにわ で ムギつぶ を つついて いました。
　Once upon a time, a sparrow was pecking some wheat grain in a farmer's backyard.

　くさむら を いったりきたり して、ひとつぶ ずつ たべて います。
　It was eating grain by grain, coming back and forth.

　それ を、おひゃくしょう の かっている ネコ が みつけました。
　The farmer’s cat happened to find it.

　これ は いいごちそう と ばかり に、ネコ は スズメ を つかまえて たべようと しました。
　The cat tried to catch the sparrow to eat.

　すると、
　Then,

「まって ください！　まって ください！」
“Wait! Please wait!”

　スズメ は はね を バタバタ させて、さけびました。
　crying out the sparrow, bating its wings.

「ネコさん、わたし を たべる つもり ですか？」
“Are you going to eat me?”

「きまってるさ。それ が どうした？」
“Of course. So what?”

　ネコ は そう いう と、スズメ の あたま を かじろう と しました。
　said the cat and it was about to gnaw the head of the sparrow.

「ネコさん。あなた は、はずかしく ない ですか？」
“Aren’t you ashamed?”

「なに が だ？」
“Ashamed of what?”

「だって、かお を あらう のを わすれて いますよ。
“Aren’t you supposed to wash your face?

　あなた の ごしゅじんたち は みんな、ごはん を たべる まえ に かお と て を あらう でしょう。
　Your master and his family wash their faces and hands before meals, don’t they?

　その くらい の こと、あなた だって しってる じゃ ありませんか」
　I’m sure you know that.”

「うむ。なるほど、たしか に そうだ」
“I see. That’s right.”

　ネコ は かお をあらおう と して、スズメ を おさえていた て を はなしました。
　The cat took its hands off of the sparrow to wash its face.

　その とたん スズメ は つばさ を ひろげて、さっと そら へ とんでいって しまいました。
　Soon after that, the sparrow spread its wings and quickly flew into the sky.

「ああ！　しまった！」
“Oh, shoot!”

　ネコ は からだ が ふるえる ほど、くやしがり ました。
　The cat regretted so much that it was shaking.

「よし、もう だまされないぞ。
“Ok. I won’t be fooled again.

　にんげん は、にんげん の すき な よう に やるさ。
　Humans do whatever they want to do.

　おれ は はじめ に ごはん を たべて、あと で かお を あらうんだ」
　But from now on, I’ll wash my face after meals.”



　それから ネコ は、ごはん の あと で かお や て を あらう こと に したのです。
　Since then, the cat had washed its face and hands after meals.
