エンドウ豆の上のお姫さま
A princess on a pea

　むかしむかし、ある国に王子さまがいました。
　Once upon a time there was a prince in a certain country.

　王子さまも年頃で、そろそろおきさきをむかえたいと思いました。
　When he reached a marrying age, he thought to take a princess for his wife.

　けれど王子さまにふさわしいおきさきは、本物の完全なお姫さまでなくてはなりません。
　However, the princess must be a true and perfect lady who appropriate for him.

　そこで王子さまは世界中を旅して回り、どこから見ても完全なお姫さまを探しました。
　He travelled around the world, looking for a lady who is perfect from any angle.

　ところがどのお姫さまも、美人でなかったり、品がなかったりして、どうしても王子さまのおめがねにかないません。
　However, every princess is not beautiful and elegant, no one can do what he wanted.

　王子さまはガッカリして国へ戻ると、すっかり気持ちが沈んでしまいました。
　When he returned to the country disappointed, his heart had totally sunk.

　そんなある夜の事、ひどいあらしの中を誰かが訪ねてきました。
　One night in a heavy storm, someone visited him.

　城の門を開けると、雨にぐっしょりぬれた一人の娘が立っていました。
　When he opened the gate, there was a girl standing with soaked by rain.

「わたしは王子さまがお探しになっている、本物の姫です」
‘I am a true princess you’ve been looking for.’

　娘がそう言うので、その夜は城に泊めてやることにしました。
　He gave her a bed in his castle for one night.

「本当のお姫さまかどうかは、すぐに分かる事ですよ」
‘It’s obvious whether she is a true princess or not.’

　王子さまのお母さんはそう言うと、娘のベッドにちょっとした工夫をしました。
　Prince’s mother said and made some job to the girl’s bed.

　まず一粒のエンドウ豆を置き、その上にしきぶとんを二十枚も重ねて、さらに二十枚の羽根ぶとんをかけた上に娘を寝かせたのです。
　Firstly, she put a pea on the bed and then put twenty mattresses on the pea, finally, laid the girl on twenty feather mattresses.

　次の朝、お母さんは娘にベッドの寝心地(ねごこち)はどうだったか尋ねました。
　Next morning, prince’s mother asked the girl how comfortable the bed was.

　すると娘は、眠そうな目をこすりながら、
　The girl said with rubbing her sleepy eyes,

「せっかくのおもてなしですが、寝心地が悪くて少しも眠れませんでしたわ」
‘Thank you for treating me nicely,but unfortunately I couldn’t sleep at all on uncomfortable bed.’

と、答えたのです。
　The girl said.

　お母さんは、さらに聞きました。
　Prince’s mother further asked the girl.

「寝心地が悪いと言いましたが、どのように悪かったのですか？」
‘You told me that the bed was uncomfortable,how uncomfortable the bed was?’

「はい。ベッドの下に、何かが入っていたのではありませんか？　背中に、あざがついてしまいました」
‘Sure. Is there anything in the bed?I had a bruise on my back.’

　お母さんは娘が、本当のお姫さまだと思いました。
　Prince’s mother thought the girl was a true princess.

　だって、たった一粒のエンドウ豆であざが出来てしまうなんて、ふっくらしたベッドでしか寝た事のない人に決まっています。
　The girl had a bruise on her back by a pea that means she had only ever slept on a squashy bed.

　こうして王子さまは、やっと本物の完全なお姫さまをおきさきとしてむかえることが出来たのです。
　At last, the prince was able to take a true and perfect princess for his wife.
