　むかしある男が、川のそばで木を切っていました。
　Once upon a time there was a man cutting woods by the river.

　ところが手が滑って、持っていたオノを川に落としてしまいました。
　One day he happened to drop his axe into the water.

　男は困ってしまい、シクシク泣きました。
　He wept for his loss, didn’t know what to do.

　オノがないと、仕事が出来ないからです。
　Because without an axe, he cannot make himself a living.

　すると川の中からヘルメスという神さまが出て来て、
　And then, there was the god Hermes appeared from a water,

　ぴかぴかに光る金のオノを見せました。
　showed him a shiny golden axe.

「お前が落としたのは、このオノか？」
“Is this your axe?” asked Hermes.

「違います。わたしが落としたのは、そんなに立派なオノではありません」
　The man answered, “No it’s not, mine is not that fine.”

　すると神さまは、次に銀のオノを出しました。
　Then Hermes showed him a silver axe and asked,

「では、このオノか？」
“Or, is this the one?”

「いいえ。そんなにきれいなオノでもありません」
“No, mine is not that beautiful either.”

「では、このオノか？」
“Then is this the one?”

　神さまが３番目に見せたのは、使い古した汚いオノでした。
　The third one Hermes had shown him was dirty and worn-out.

「そうです。そうです。拾って下さってありがとうございます」
“Yes, that is the one! I’m so glad you finding it for me,” said he.

「そうか、お前は正直な男だな」
“You are an honest man.”

　神さまは感心して、金のオノも銀のオノも男にくれました。
　Hermes was so impressed by man’s honesty, that he gave him both golden and silver axe as well.

　喜んだ男がこの事を友だちに話すと、友だちはうらやましがって、
　When the man returned home and told his friend about it with overjoyed look, his friend was so jealous.

「おれも金のオノをもらってこよう」
　He said to himself , “I might as well get myself a golden axe.”

と、さっそく汚いオノを持って川へ出かけました。
　And went straight to a river with his own dirty axe.

　そして、
　There he arrived in a river,

「えいっ！」
　and threw his axe into a water.

と、わざとオノを川に投げると、シクシクうそ泣きを始めました。
　He indeed did that on purpose and faked his crying.

　そこへ川から神さまが出て来て、
　There once again the god Hermes appeared from the water,

　ぴかぴか光る金のオノを見せました。
　showed him a shiny golden axe.

「お前が落としたのは、このオノか？」
“Is this your axe?”asked Hermes.

「そうです。そうです。金のオノです。その金のオノを川に落としてしまったんです」
　He answered, “Oh yes, that golden axe is mine. I happened to drop it into the water.”

　とたんに、神さまは目をつり上げて、
　Hermes shot a resentful look at the man and shouted,

「このうそつきの欲張り者め！！」
“What a greedy liar you are!”

　怖い顔で怒鳴ると、川の中へ戻ってしまいました。
　Hermes dove right back into the water.

　うそつきで欲張りな友だちは、自分のオノも拾ってもらえず、いつまでも川のそばでワンワン泣いていました。
　The man who was “A greedy liar”, not only lost his axe, but had to kept wailing by the water.

　神さまは正直な人には優しくしてくれますが、それだけに、うそつきには厳しい態度を取ります。
　God is good to you for being honest, but he punishes you for being a liar.

　欲張ってうそをつくと、結局は前よりも損をするのです。
　If you become greedy and liar, you will lose what you have after all.

　ちなみに、よく知られている「金のオノ、銀のオノ」です。
　By the way, it is well-known "The golden axe".

　一般的なイメージは、「湖の女神」ですが、本来はこの話の様に、「川のヘルメス」なのです。
　The general image is "the goddess of the lake", but originally it is "hermes of the river" as in this story.
