Kyogawa the God

　むかしむかし、矢迫間(やばさま)と言うところに、小さな池がある『京河(きょうがわ)さま』と呼ばれる小さな神社がありました。
　Once upon a time, in a place called Yabasama, there was a small shrine with a small pond – the shrine was called “Kyogawa the God.”

　ある年の夏は来る日も来る日も日照り続きで、村の田畑が枯れ始めていました。
　In one summer, day after day, a drought continued, and fields of rice and crops started to wither.

「このままでは、作物は全滅だ」
“If this continues, we will make no crop.”

「こうなれば、雨乞いをしよう」
“Let’s pray for rain. We have no choice.”

　そこで村のみんなは近くの神社やお寺をまわって雨乞いをしましたが、雨は一向に降りません。
　All the people in the village visited the shrines and temples in the neighborhood, but it never rained.

　そして最後の頼みと、小さな神社の京河さまへお参りに行ったのです。
　Then, they went to pray in the small shrine, Kyogawa the God, as a last resort.

「どうか、雨を降らせてください」
“Please bring us rain.”

「どうか、雨を降らせてください」
“Please bring us rain.”

　みんなが一心にお参りしていると葉っぱだらけの小さな池の水がごうごうと動き出して、中から池の主の大蛇が姿を現しました。
　When they prayed intently,something started moving water in the small pond covered with leaves.Here was the Serpent, the master of the pond, coming out of the water.

「だっ、大蛇だー！」
“Oh, no, it is the Serpent!”

　みんながびっくりしていると、その大蛇が言いました。
　When everyone was in shock, the Serpent talked to them.

「お前たち、さっきから一生懸命、何をそんなに頼んでいるのだ？」
“You all sound so desperate. What have you been asking for?”

　村の庄屋さんが、震えながら答えました。
　The village headman, trembling with fear, answered.

「は、はい。
“Uh, yes.

　実は、この夏は雨が一粒も降らないので、村の田畑は枯れてしまい、今では飲み水にも不自由しております。
　As a matter of fact, we have no drop of rain this summer. Our fields of rice and crops wither, and now we do not even have enough drinking water.

　そこで京河さまへ雨を降らせてもらおうと、お願いをしておりました」
　That is why we were praying to Kyogawa the God for rain.”

「なんだ、そんな事か。
“Oh, is that all you want?

　ならば、この池をきれいに掃除してくれぬか。
　Well, then, can you clean up this pond?”

　葉っぱや泥がたまって、困っていたのだ。
　Leaves and mud have piled up here – I was fed up with this.

　池をきれいにしてくれたら、雨を降らせてやろう」
　Clean up the pond. Then, I will bring you rain.”

　大蛇はそう言うと、また池の中へと潜ってしまいました。
　Having told them so, the Serpent went back into the pond.

　そこで村のみんなは大蛇の言葉を信じて、池をきれいに掃除しました。
　Everyone in the village believed the Serpent’s words and cleaned the pond nicely.

　するとその日の夜遅く、ポツリポツリと大粒の雨が降り始めたのです。
　Then, late that night, large drops of rain started to fall bit by bit.

「おおっ、雨だ！　京河さまが雨を降らせてくれたぞ！」
“Look, it is raining! Kyogawa the God has brought us the rain!”

　それから村人たちは雨に困る事があると、京河さまの池を掃除して雨を降らせてもらったという事です。
　Ever since, whenever the people in the village had a lack of rain,they cleaned the pond of Kyogawa the God to bring them rain.
