　ロバ が まきば で くさ を たべて いると、オオカミ が やってくる のが みえました。
　While a donkey was feeding in a meadow, he saw a wolf coming towards him.

　ロバ は、あし を けが した ふり を しました。
　So the donkey pretended to be injured.

　オオカミ が よってきて、
　The wolf approached the donkey,

「どうして、あし を ひきずっているの？」
　and asked him,

と、たずねました。
”Why are you limping?”

「かきね を とびこえよう と して、イバラ に あし を ついて トゲ を さして しまった から です。
The donkey answered, “Because I stepped upon a thorn when I tried to jump over the hedge.

　あなた は ぼく を たべる つもり でしょう けれど、その まえ に、トゲ を ぬいて くれませんか？
　I bet you're eating me, but would you please pull the thorn out before that?

　そうすれば、くち に トゲ が ささる しんぱい なし に、ぼく を たべる こと が できる でしょう」
　That way you can eat me without worrying about getting the thorn in your throat.”

　オオカミ は、なるほど そのとおり だと おもいました。
　The wolf thought that was right.

　オオカミ が ロバ の あし を もちあげて、
　The wolf lifted up the donkey's foot,

　いっしょうけんめい に ひづめ を しらべている のを みすまして ロバ は、
　and started to locate the thorn.

　ガツーン！
　In the meantime, the donkey kicked the wolf's mouth with all his force,

と、オオカミ の くち を おもいっきり けとばし ました。
　and chipped all of his teeth.

　おかげで オオカミ の は は、ぜんぶ おれて しまいました。
　Then the wolf said,

　ひどいめ に あった オオカミ は、いいました。
”I was silly.

「おれ が バカ だったんだ。
　My father taught me how to be a butcher,

　おやじ から しこまれた しごと は にくや なのに、
　but why did I attempt to act like a doctor?”

　いしゃ の まね なんか、どうして する き に なったん だろう」
　This story tells us that people who try something that is beyond their ability



　この ように、じぶん に できも しない しごと を やろう と する ひと は へま を して、
　tend to make a blunder,

　ひどいめ に あう のが あたりまえ です。
　and eventually have a hard time.
