　若狭の国(わかさのくに→福井県)の古いほら穴には、人魚の肉を食べた女が八百才まで生きて身を隠したとの言い伝えがあります。
　Legend has it in Wakasa region (as Fukui prefecture now) that a woman ate mermaid flesh lived to 800 years old and she hid herself in an old cave.

　その女は尼さんになって諸国をまわったので、いつの頃からか八百才の尼さんという意味の、八百比丘尼(やおびくに)と呼ばれるようになりました。
　The woman became a nun and traveled around several regions, so at some point, people started calling her “Yaobikuni” that means a 800-year-old nun.

　さて、その八百比丘尼がまだ子供の頃、近くの村の長者たちが集まって宝比べをした事がありました。
　Anyway, when Yaobikuni was still a little girl, wealthy men in neighborhood villages got together to compete on their treasures.

　その中に見た事もない白いひげの上品な老人が仲間入りをして、一通りみんなの宝自慢が終ると、自分の屋敷へ長者たちを招いたのです。
　Among these wealthy men, there was an elegant old man with white beard. No one had ever seen him before. When everyone had shown off their own treasures, the old man invited them all to his house.

　浜辺には美しい小舟が用意されていて、全員が乗り込むと絹の様な白い布がまるで目隠しでもするようにみんなの上にかけられました。
　On the beach, a beautiful boat was ready for them.When they were all aboard, a white silk-like cloth covered them as if they were blindfolded.

　そして舟が着いた先は、とても立派なご殿でした。
　When the boat docked, they saw a gorgeous mansion.

　老人の案内でたくさんの部屋にぎっしりとつまった宝物を見せてもらっている途中、
　The old man guided them into a lot of rooms that are full of treasures when

　一人の長者が台所をのぞくと、
　a wealthy man happened to look into the kitchen.

　まさに女の子の様な生き物を料理しているところだったのです。
　It was when a creature that looks like a girl was being cooked.

「なっ、何じゃ、あれは！？　 人間の子どもの様だが、腰から下が魚の尾びれだ」
“What, what is that!? She looks like a human child but the lower part of her body is a fishtail.”

　驚いた長者がその事をすぐにみんなに知らせたので、
　The wealthy man was so surprised, he told everyone about this.

　後から出たごちそうには、誰一人手をつけませんでした。
　Therefore, none of them ever touched feast dinner.

　それを見た老人は、
　The old man noticed this.

「せっかく人魚の肉をごちそうしようと思ったのに、残ってしまってはもったいない」
　He said, “what a pity, I tried to treat them to a feast with mermaid flesh but they left it all.”

　と、長者たちが帰る時に土産として持たせたのです。
　So, when the wealthy men left, he gave them the leftovers as takeaway.

　帰りもまたあの白い布がかけられて、どこを走っているかわからないままに元の浜辺へとたどり着きました。
　On their way back, they were covered with the white cloth again, so they had no idea where the boat was sailing until they came back to the beach.

　そして舟がどこへともなく姿を消すと、長者たちは気味の悪い人魚の肉を海に投げ捨てました。
　When the boat disappeared somewhere, the wealthy men threw away the eerie mermaid flesh into sea.

　ところが珍しい物が大好きな高橋(たかはし)長者だけは人魚の肉を捨てずに家に持って帰り、とりあえず戸だなの中に隠したのです。
　However, a wealthy man, Mr. Takahashi, was very fond of rare things. He was the only man who did not throw away the mermaid flesh and secretly took it back home. He hid it in a cupboard just for the time being.

　そして高橋長者には十五歳になる娘がいたのですが、この娘は長者が眠ってしまった後で、こっそりその肉を食べてしまったのでした。
　The wealthy man, Mr. Takahashi, has a 15-year-old daughter. She happened to eat the meat secretly when the wealthy man has fallen asleep.

　人魚の肉を食べた娘は、年頃になると色の白い美しい娘になりました。
　The daughter who ate the mermaid flesh reached puberty, and she turned a beautiful fair-skinned girl.

　やがて結婚をして時が流れ、夫は老人になっていきましたが、どうした事か嫁は若くて美しいままなのです。
　Before long, she married and time passed. Her husband was becoming an old man, but for some reason, his wife stayed young and beautiful.

　その美しさに夫が死んだ後も求婚者は後を絶たず、とうとう三十九人もの男に嫁入りをしたのでした。
　Even after her husband died, one after another proposed to her, and eventually, she married as many as 39 men.

　その間、夫や村人が次々と死んで行くのに、女は年を取る事も死ぬ事もないのです。
　In the meantime, her husbands and other people in the village died one after another. Still, she never got old or died.

　人々は、
　People thought

「年を取らんのは、人魚の肉を食べたからじゃ。あの女は人魚の肉を食べて、化け物になったのじゃ」
“she never gets old because she ate mermaid flesh. She ate mermaid flesh to turn a monster.”

と、噂をしました。
　It was rumored.

　そして誰からも相手にされなくなった女は、一人ぼっちの悲しさに尼の姿になって、諸国行脚(しょこくあんぎゃ)に出たのです。
　Then, no one spoke to the woman. She was so lonely, she became a nun and went on a pilgrimage to several regions.

　そして行く先々で良い事をしながら白い椿(つばき)を植えて歩き、やがて古里(ふるさと)に帰ってくると、
　She did good deeds and plant white camellias wherever she visited on foot. When she eventually came back to her hometown,

　浜辺近くのほら穴のそばに白椿(しろつばき)の木を植えて、その中に入ったきり出てくる事はありませんでした。
　she planted a white camellia tree near a cave around the beach. She went into the cave and never came out of it again.
