裸の王さま

むかしむかし、あるところに、とても着物の好きな王さまがいました。
Once upon a time, there was an Emperor, who really loved clothes.
新しい着物を作っては、それを着て歩くのが王さまの楽しみです。
His pleasure was getting new dresses and walking around showing off his brand-new clothing.
ある日の事、服職人を名乗る二人のペテン師がやって来て言いました。
One day, two rogues calling themselves dressmakers came to him.
「わたしたちは、とても美しい布をおる事が出来るのです。
They said “We can weave so beautiful fabric.
その布はとても不思議な布で、それで作った着物は、おろか者、つまり馬鹿には見えないのです」
It has great mysterious power and the dress made of the cloth is invisible to an idiot or crazy person.”
「ほほう。それは面白い。さっそく布をおって、着物を作ってくれ」
“Well, I see. That’s interesting. Now, weave the fabric and make my dress!”
王さまは、うれしそうに言いました。
The Emperor happily said so.
(その着物を着て歩けば、家来たちが利口者か、おろか者か、すぐに見分けがつくわけだ)
(Aha, walking around in the dress, I can easily tell which men are clever or stupid.)
二人の男は布をおるのに必要だと言って、
The two rogues asked the Emperor
王さまにたくさんのお金を出させると、熱心に布をおり始めました。
for so much money to weave the fabric and began to weave enthusiastically.
とは言っても、本当は布をおっている様な、ふりをしているだけなのですが。
Well, tell the truth, they just went through the motion of weaving the fabric!!!
「いったい、どんな着物だろう？ 早く着てみたいものだ」
“What would it be like? I would like to try it on now!”
王さまは、その不思議な着物を早く着たくてなりません。
The Emperor wanted nothing more than to try the curious dress on.
そこで大臣に言いつけて、着物がどのくらい出来たかを見にやりました。
So, he told his minister to go and see how the situation was.
さて、布を見に行った大臣ですが、布をおっている二人の男のそばへ行ってみてビックリです。
Then, approaching the two men weaving the fabric, the minister who got the order was so surprised.
「？？？」
“???”
何も、見えないのです。
He couldn’t see anything.
ゴシゴシ、ゴシゴシ。
He rubbed his eyes.
大臣は目をこすってみましたが、やはり何も見えません。
Doing so, he could see nothing.
それに気づいた二人の男は手を休めると、わざとらしく大臣に言いました。
Noticing the minister and pausing in their labor, the two men asked the minister in a very artificial way.
「やあ、これは大臣。どうです、見事な布でしょう。
“Hello, my dear minister. How does it look? So gorgeous, don’t you think so?
もうすぐ出来上がりますので、王さまにふさわしい、立派な着物に仕上げますよ」
We are almost done. It will be so splendid and become the appropriate dress for our King.”
「いや、あの、・・・うむ、そうだな。確かに見事な布だ」
“Well, well, aha. Yes, exactly. Absolutely gorgeous! ”
大臣はそう言うと、足早に部屋を出て行きました。
The minister left the message and get out of the room quickly.
「困ったな、王さまに何て報告すれば良いのだろう？」
“Oh my god! How can I let my Emperor know about this? ”
大臣は、悩みました。
He was thinking.
大臣は今まで、うそをついた事が一度もありません。
He had never told any lies before.
でも正直に見えないと言えば、自分はおろか者だと言う事になり、下手をすれば大臣をやめさせられてしまいます。
However, if he reports the fact that he couldn’t see anything, that would mean he must be an idiot. In the worst case, he would be forced to resign from his minister title.
そこで、王さまの所へ帰ると、
When he went back to the Emperor’s, he remarked:
「まことに見事な布です。もうすぐ出来上がって、着物にぬうそうです」
That is a really wonderful fabric. They are almost done and going to sew your dress.”
と、うそを言いました。
So, he decided to tell a lie.
「そうか、それほど見事な布か」
“I see. It could be such a wonderful one.”
大臣がうそを言った事がないので、王さまは大臣の言葉を信じました。
Because his minister had never told any lies, the Emperor believed him without any doubt.
そして王さまは、その不思議な布を自分でも見たくなり、あくる日、大臣を連れて見に行く事にしたのです。
Then, the Emperor became to want to see the mysterious fabric by himself. He decided to go and see the fabric with his minister the next day.
二人の男が布をおっている部屋に着いた王さまは、二人の男に声をかけました。
Arriving at the room where the two rogues had been weaving the fabric, he gave words to the men.
「うむ、二人ともごくろう。して、例の不思議な布は、どこにあるのじゃな？」
“Um, well done. Then where is the mysterious fabric?”
すると二人の男は、大きな布を持ち上げるふりをして言いました。
The two men pretended to lift a large cloth up and replied soon.
「王さま、これでございます。どうです、なかなか見事な布でしょう。たった今、完成したのでございます」
“Your Highness, here it is. How do you think? We believe this is one of the greatest fabrics. We have just finished it now.”
「へっ？ ・・・」
“Wait???”
何も見えないので、王さまは目をゴシゴシとこすりました。
Because he couldn’t see anything, he rubbed his eyes.
それを見た二人の男は、少し意地悪く尋ねました。
The two men paying attention to the Emperor asked a malicious question.
「あの・・・、もしかして、この布がお見えにならないとか」
“Your Highness… you wouldn't say… that you couldn't see this fabric…”
その言葉にビクッとして王さまは、あわてて言いました。
The Emperor became a little bit frightened at the words and said in haste.
「いや、そんな事はないぞ。なるほど、確かにこれは素晴らしい布だ。
“No way, I see. This is amazing! ”
うむ、実に気にいったぞ。さあ、早く着物にぬってくれ。
Absolutely, I love this. Now, let’s get started to sew my dress with this!
もうすぐ行われるお祭りには、ぜひとも着て歩きたいのだ。あはははははー」
I would really love to walk around in the dress at the coming festival. Hahaha!”
そしてお祭りの日の朝、二人の男が完成した着物を届けに来て言いました。
On the day of the festival, the two men brought the dress and said.
「さあ、わたしたちが着物をお着せしますから、王さま、どうぞ裸になって下さい」
“Your Highness, we would get you changed. Would you please get naked?”
裸になった王さまに、二人の男は出来上がった事になっているその着物を丁寧に着せるふりをしました。
The Emperor went naked and the two men pretend to put the dress on him respectfully.
着せ終わると、そばにいた家来たちは、
Seeing the change, the Emperor’s men spoke highly in turn.
「まことによく似合って、ご立派です」
“Your Highness, you look so nice. Majestic!”
「本当に。それにしても、見事な着物です」
と、口々に褒め立てました。
“Absolutely, yes! Anyway, so wonderful dress!”
「そうか、そんなに良く似合うか。あはははははー」
“Thank you. Thank you. So nice. Good. Well, well. Hahaha!!! ”
王さまは、いかにも満足そうに言いました。
The Emperor replied so with satisfaction.
「さあ、新しい着物のうわさを聞いて、町の者も早く見たがっておる。すぐに出発させよ」
“Well, you know. People hearing about my new dress are looking forward to seeing me. Let’s set out!”
王さまは行列をしたがえると、いばって、ゆっくりと歩きました。
The Emperor let his men form a procession and took the road proudly and slowly.
それを見た大勢の町の人たちは、目を見張りながら、わざと大きな声で口々に、
Watching the line, many people in the town opened their eyes wide and purposely spoke out loudly.
「何て立派だろう。とても良くお似合いだ」
“What a majestic Emperor! You look very nice!”
「さすがは王さま。着物が良くお似合いだ事」
と、言いました。
“We are proud of our highness! You look so well in the dress!”
本当は、みんな何も見えていないのですが、そんな事を人に知られたら、自分はおろか者だと思われてしまいます。
In fact, everyone saw nothing. Though, if others knew that he or she couldn’t see anything, they would think of him or her as an idiot.
その時です。
At that time.
行列を見ていた小さな子どもが、笑って言いました。
A small child watching the line laughed out and said.
「わーい、おかしいな。裸の王さまが、いばって歩いているよ」
“Wow! It’s strange. The Naked Emperor is walking proudly.”
その声を聞いた町の人たちも、口々に言いました。
Hearing the child’s voice, people in the town admitted and said.
「やっぱり、そうだよな。王さまは、どう見ても裸だよな」
“We know. That’s right. Obviously, our Emperor has nothing on.”
「そうだよ。着物を着ているふりをしているけど、王さまは裸だよ」
“Right. He is naked. He just pretends to be in the dress.”
「ああ、見えもしない着物を見える様なふりをしていた、自分が恥ずかしい」
“Oh my. I’m ashamed. I also pretended to see something invisible.”
でも、もっと恥ずかしかったのは、ペテン師にだまされて裸で歩いていた事に気がついた王さまです。
After all, who felt the most ashamed of all the people was the Emperor himself. He recognized that he himself had been tricked by rogues and walking around in the raw.
しかし、今は大切なお祭りの途中なので、すぐに行進を止めるわけにはいきません。
However, it was during the important festival, he couldn’t stop the procession.
王さまは恥ずかしさのあまり、まっ赤になった顔のまま行進を終えると、逃げる様にお城へ帰って行ったという事です。
The Emperor was so ashamed and turned red from embarrassment. Finishing the procession, he got away from there instantly and run back into his castle.
