　それは、寒い寒い冬の事です。
　It was a very, very cold winter.

　雪の混じった冷たい風が吹いていましたが、部屋の中は気持ち良く温まっていました。
　Cold snowy wind was blowing, but it was warm and comfortable in the room.

　ここは、地面の中の部屋です。
　The room was underneath the ground.

　そこには、花が眠っていました。
　A flower was asleep there.

　ある日、雨が降りました。
　One day, it rained.

　雨のしずくは土の中まで染み込んで行き、花の根っこをゆすぶりました。
　Every drop of the rain went deep into the ground, and shook the root of the flower.

「起きなさい、起きなさいな」
“Wake up, Wake up.”

「う、うーん・・・」
“Uh, Uh …”

　花の根っこは、なかなか目を覚まそうとしません。
　The root of the flower hardly woke up.

　そのうちに春が来て、温かいお日さまの光がさす様になりました。
　Meanwhile, spring arrived. There was warm sunlight.

　お日さまの光は土の間をくぐって、花の根っこの所まで入っていきました。
　The warm sunlight came through the ground and reach the root of the flower.

　そして花の根っこを、少しずつ、少しずつ、温めてやりました。
　Little by little, the warm sunlight warmed up the root of the flower.

「ああ、体の中がムズムズする。手足をウーンと、思いっ切り伸ばしたいなあ」
“Oh, I feel itchy in my body. I want to fully stretch out my arms and legs.”

　花の根っこは目を覚まして、そんな事を言いました。
　The root of the flower woke up and said so.

　また、雨が降りました。
　Then, it rained again.

　雨は土の中に染み込むと、花の根っこをくるんでいる、薄い皮を濡らして柔らかくして言いました。
　The rain came through the ground and wetted the skin covering the root of the flower. Then, the rain said to the root of the flower.

「出て来なさい。早く、出て来なさい」
“Come out. Come out, quick.”

　そこへまた、温かいお日さまの光が入って来て、ポカポカと温めました。
　Now, the warm sunlight came through and warmed up the root of the flower.

「ああ、もう、ジッとしてはいられないよう」
“Oh, I cannot stay still any more.”

と、花の根っこは言いました。
　The root of the flower said so.

　間もなく根っこは、白いひげの様な根を出して来ました。
　Before long, a white and whisker-like root hair stuck out of the root.

　それから、薄緑の芽を伸ばして来ました。
　Then, a light green bud came out.

　芽はお日さま光をいっぱい浴びようと、お日さまの光が来る方へと伸びて行きました。
　The bud moved toward the sunlight to get as much sunlight as possible.


　そしてとうとう、土の上に出て来ました。
　At last, the bud came out of the ground.

「ああ、なんて明るいんだろう」
“Oh, how bright!”

　芽は、眩しくて困りました。
　It was so bright that the bud did not what to do.

　すると、お日さまは、
　The sun talked to the bud.

「やあ、やっと顔を見せてくれたね」
“Hello, at last, you came see me.”

と、やさしく気持ちの良い光で、小さな芽を包みました。
　The sun held the bud with gentle, comfortable light.


　今度は、そよそよと風が吹いて来て言いました。
　Then, gentle breeze came and talked to the bud.

「はじめまして、やっと、出て来たんだね」
“Nice to see you. At last, you came out.”

　そして今度は小鳥がやって来て、楽しそうに歌いました。
　A little bird flew over to the bud and started singing happily.

「♪　芽が出たよ。　芽が出たよ。可愛い芽が出たよ」
“♪ Here comes the bud. Here comes the bud. What a lovely bud.”

　芽は、うれしくなりました。
　The bud felt happy.

「よーし、もっと大きくなって、みんなに喜んでもらおう」
“OK, I will grow up more and everyone will be happy.”

　芽は頑張って、毎日毎日大きくなりました。
　The bud grew up day by day.

　もう、お日さまも眩しくはありません。
　The sun was no longer too bright.

　グングン、グングン伸びていきました。
　The bud kept growing up and up.

「しっかり、しっかり」
“Go, go!”

「がんばれ、がんばれ」
“Carry on, carry on!”

「その調子だよ」
“Keep it up!”

「♪　もうすぐ、もうすぐ、もうすぐだー」
“♪ Coming up, coming up soon.”

　お日さまも、雨も、風も、小鳥も、みんな励ましてくれました。
　The sun, the rain, the breeze, and the little bird – everyone cheered the bud up.

　そしてついに、芽は可愛いつぼみをつけて、きれいな花を咲かせたのです。
　At long last, the bud opened in a lovely way and turned into a beautiful flower.

「やったー」
“You made it!”

「おめでとう」
“Congratulations”

「すごく、きれいだよ」
“Yu are so beautiful.”

「♪　花が出たよ。花が出たよ。可愛い花が出たよ」
“♪ The flower blooms, the flower blooms. What a beautiful flower.”

　みんなに褒めてもらって、花はとても幸せでした。
　Everyone admired the flower. The flower was very happy.

　ほら、あなたのお庭に咲いている花が、その花ですよ。
　Look, that is the flower blooming in your garden.

ワンポイントアドバイス

・「困る」 … do/does/did not know what to do。英語では状況によって「困る」の訳が異なります。この場合は「どうしていいかわからない」と表現しました。

・「やっと顔を見せてくれたね」 … “… at last, you came see me”。「顔を見せる」をそのまま訳すと英語では不自然です。この場合は「やっと会いに来てくれたね」　がいちばん近い表現と思われます。

・「はじめまして」 … Nice to meet you。”How do you do.” でももちろん構いませんが、こちらの方がより親しみやすい表現です。

・「その調子だよ」 … Keep it up。口語ではよく使われる表現です。

・「やったー」 … You made it。良い結果を出した人に対して「やったね！」という感じで声をかけるときに使われます。
