　ディオゲネス は ギリシャ の てつがくしゃ で、するどい ひにく な こと を いう のが じょうず な ひと でした。
　Diogenes was a Greek philosopher who was good at making shrewd and cynic remarks.



　ディオゲネス が たび に でて あるいて いきますと、かわ の きし に つきました。
　One day, when he was walking on his trip, he came across a river bank.

　かわ の みず は まんまん と、あふれそう です。
　The river was almost flooded.

　ディオゲネス は、はた と こまって、きし に たったまま とほう に くれて いました。
　He was at a loss, and kept standing at the bank.

　この かわ の そば に すんでいて、たびびとたち を たすけて かわ を わたらせる のを しごと に している おとこ が いました。
　In the meantime, there was a man who lived near the river and assisted travelers by carrying them across the river for a living.

　ディオゲネス が こまっている のを みた この おとこ は、そば へ よってきて、
　He saw Diogenes who looked at a complete loss, so he approached Diogenes and

　ディオゲネス を じぶん の かた に のせました。
　put him on the shoulder.

　そして むこうぎし まで、しんせつ に はこんで くれたのです。
　The man kindly carried Diogenes across the river.

　ぶじ に かわ を わたる こと が できた ディオゲネス は、しんせつ な おとこ に おれい を したい と おもいました が、
　After carried across the river safely, Diogenes wanted to reward the man somehow,

　とても びんぼう なので おれい が できません。
　but he could not come up with anything because he was too poor.

「ああ、こんな に びんぼう で なければ、この ひと に たっぷり おれい が できる のに」
”Oh, if I were not too poor, I could reward this man without any restraint.”

と、ざんねん に おもい ました。
　He said to himself, and started to ponder,

「どうやって、かんしゃ を あらわせば よい だろう」
”How can I show my appreciation to him?”

　ディオゲネス は、すっかり かんがえこんで しまいました。

　ディオゲネス が こうやって かんがえこんでいる うちに、
　While he was pondering,

　あいて の おとこ は かわ の むこう に べつ な たびびと が きた のを みつける と、さっさ と かわ を わたって むこうぎし へ もどりました。
　the man found another traveler on the other side of the bank, and approached him.

　そして、さっき と おなじ よう に かた に のせて わたして やりました。
　The man put the traveler on the shoulder, and carried him across the river in the same way.

　それ を みた ディオゲネス は、おとこ に ちかづいて、こう いいました。
　Seeing the man help the traveler, Diogenes approached the man and said,

「わたし は、もう あなた に おれい を したい とは おもいませんよ。
”I don't feel like rewarding you anymore.

　わたし が ディオゲネス だと わかった から、しんせつ に してくれた と おもった のに、
　I thought you did good to me because you noticed I was Diogenes.

　そうでは なくて、あなた は ただ、
　However, you just did what you did because it's your hobby.”

　だれかれなし に かわ を わたらせる のが しゅみ なの だから」

　この おはなし は、
　This story tells us that

　だれにでも しんせつ に する ひと は、しんせつ な ひと だと かんしゃ される より も、
　people who do good to whoever they are tend to be recognized as weird people

　かわった ひと だと おもわれる ほう が おおい と いう こと を おしえています。
　rather than to be appreciated as kind people.
