　ラクダ は おすウシ の つの を みて、うらやましく なりました。
　A camel became envious of an ox who has horns.

「ああ やって、おおきな つの を ふりたてて いる のは すてき だなあ。ぼく も ほしいなあ」
“It’s nice tossing big horns like that. I wish I had them, too.”

　そこで ラクダ は、ゼウス の かみ の ところ へ いって、
　So the camel visited Zeus.

「どうか、ぼく にも つの を はやして ください」
“Please let me have horns,”

と、おねがい しました。
　asked the camel.

　すると ゼウス は、
　The Zeus said,

「なに を いうか。
“What are you saying?

　おまえ には おおきくて りっぱな からだ と つよい ちから を さずけて やった のに、まだ ふふく なのか」
　I gave you a big and fine body and strength, and you are still not satisfied?”

と、いって、
　（上段で翻訳済み)

　つの を あたえなかった だけ で なく、ラクダ の みみ を すこし けずり おとして しまいました。
　Zeus not only didn’t give horns to the camel but also cut off little bit of the camel’s ears.



　よくばり の ふへい は たにん を うらやんで いる ために、
　When a greedy person is dissatisfied because he is envious of others,

　せっかく じぶん が もっている よい ところ に き が つかないで、
　he often overlooks the advantage he already has

　しまい には それまで だめ に してしまう もの です。
　and ends up spoiling it, too.
