　むかしむかし、あるところに、一人の犬飼いがいました。
　Once upon a time, there was a man working as a dog herder.

　犬飼いとは、狩りで使う猟犬を育てる仕事です。
　Dog herder’s job is to raise hunting dogs.

　ある日の事、犬飼いがお気に入りの犬を連れて池のそばを通ると、犬が急に吠え出したのです。
　One day, the man was walking along the pond with his favorite dog, and the dog suddenly started barking.

「こら、いったいどうした？　・・・あっ！」
‘Hey, what’s going on? …Wow!’

　見ると、美しい娘が池で水浴びをしているではありませんか。
　He found a beautiful girl bathing in the pond.

「こんな美しい娘、今まで見たことがない。
‘I have never seen such a beautiful girl before.

　あれはきっと、うわさに聞いた天女(てんにょ)だな。
　She must be a celestial maiden, I’ve heard of her.

　天女なら、きっとどこかに羽衣(はごろも)を脱いでいるはず」
　If she is a celestial maiden, she should take off her robe somewhere.’

　犬飼いは、犬に命じました。
　The dog herder ordered the dog.

「早く、あの天女の羽衣を探し出せ」
‘Find her robe now.’

　さて、しばらくして天女が池からあがってきましたが、
　After a while, the celestial maiden got out of the pond.

　どうした事か大切な羽衣がどこにも見当たりません。
　Unfortunately, her precious robe had disappeared.

　犬飼いが、羽衣を隠してしまったからです。
　That’s because the dog herder had hidden the robe.

　羽衣がなければ、天女は天へ戻れません。
　The celestial maiden cannot go back to the sky without the robe.

「どうしよう・・・」
‘What should I do…’

　天女が困っていると、犬飼いが現れて言いました。
　When she finished talking, the dog herder said,

「お困りの様だが、どうしました？」
‘May I help you?’

「はい、実は・・・」
‘Thank you. Actually…’

　天女が事情を話すと、犬飼いが言いました。
　When she finished talking, the dog herder said,

「それなら羽衣が見つかるまで、わしの家にいればいい」
‘You can stay at my house until you find the robe.’

　こうなれば、仕方ありません。
　She had no choice.

　行くところのない天女は、犬飼いの家に行きました。
　She had no place to go, so she went to the dog herder’s house.

　そして、犬飼いのお嫁さんになったのです。
　Finally, she became the wife of the dog herder.

　二人が仲良く暮らして、数年がたちました。
　A few years passed since the couple got along together.

　ところがある日、嫁になった天女が隠してあった羽衣を見つけてしまったのです。
　However, the celestial maiden finally found her robe hidden by the dog herder.

「ひどい！　あんまりだわ！」
‘How terrible! That’s unbelievable!’

　天女はすぐに羽衣を身につけると、空高く舞い上がって行きました。
　She put the robe on quickly and went up high in the sky.

　それに気づいた犬飼いは、
　When the dog herder noticed her,

「待っておくれ！　行かないでおくれ！」
‘Wait! Don’t go!’

と、声を張り上げましたが、天女はそのまま空の向こうへ消えてしまいました。
　He yelled to her, but she disappeared into the sky.


　お嫁さんの天女がいなくなってから、
　Since the day his wife left,

　犬飼いは毎日毎日、天女の事を考えていました。
　the dog herder thought of her every single day.

「どうすれば、妻を連れ戻せるだろうか？　どうすれば・・・」
‘How can I bring her home? What should I do?’

　そこで犬飼いは、占い師のおばあさんのところへ相談に行きました。
　He went to an old fortune teller.

　すると占い師は、こう言いました。
　She advised him,

「連れ戻す事は出来ないよ。
　‘You cannot bring her back home.’

　だが、お前の方から訪ねて行けばいい」
‘But, you can visit her.’

「訪ねて行けと言っても、どうやって天に行けば良いのだ？」
　How can I go to the sky?

「それは簡単さ。
‘It’s so easy.

　天女の所へ行くには、一晩で百足のわらじを作れば良い。
　To see her, you must make 100 straw sandals in one night.

　その百足のわらじを土に埋めて、その上にヘチマの種をまいてごらん」
　After making the sandals, you bury them in the ground, and plant sponge cucumber seeds on it.’

　それを聞いた犬飼いは、さっそく家に帰るとわらじを作り始めました。
　The dog herder went home and soon started to make the straw sandals.

(妻よ、待っていろよ。必ず迎えに行くからな)
‘My loving wife, I will never fail to take you home.’

　百足のわらじを作る事は、とても大変な事です。
　It’s quite difficult to make 100 straw sandals.

　犬飼いは休む事なく、わらじを作り続けました。
　He kept making the straw sandals without taking a rest.

　でも夜が明けた時には、九十九足しか出来上がっていませんでした。
　However, when the morning came, he had only made 99 straw sandals.

「九十九足しかないが、百足とは、あまり変わるまい」
‘I’m one sandal short, but 99 is almost the same as 100.’

　そして占い師の言葉通りに、わらじを土に埋めてヘチマの種をまくとどうでしょう。
　He buried the sandals in the ground, and planted the sponge cucumber seeds.

　ヘチマのつるがドンドンドンドン伸びて、今にも天に届きそうになりました。
　The vines of the sponge cucumber grew fast until it almost reached the sky.

「よし、お前も付いて来い」
‘Right, you come with me.’

　 犬飼いは犬と一緒に、ヘチマのつるを登って行きました。
　The dog herder and the dog climbed the vines.

「もう少しだ。もう少しで妻に会えるぞ」
‘We are almost there. I can see my wife soon.’

　 けれど、もう少しで天に届くところで、
　Although they almost reached the sky,

　ヘチマのつるは伸びるのを止めてしまったのです。
　the vines stopped growing.

「何という事だ。わらじが一足、たりないばかりに！」
‘How could this happen? Is it my fault not to make one more straw sandal?’

　犬飼いがくやしがっていると、
　When he was chagrined,

　後から付いて来た犬が犬飼いの頭をピョンと飛び越えて、天へ飛び上がったのです。
　the dog following him jumped over his head and reached the sky.

　そして犬は、犬飼いにお尻を向けると、
　Then the dog turned his back on him,

「それ、だんなさま」
‘Here, master.’

と、長い尻尾をたらしてくれました。
　and hung the long tail.

「ありがたい」
‘Thank you.’

　犬飼いは犬の尻尾をつかむと、何とか天にたどり着きました。
　The dog herder caught the dog’s tail and he managed to reach the sky.

　その後、犬飼いは彦星に、お嫁さんの天女は織姫になったという事です。
　Afterwards, it is said that the dog herder became Hikoboshi as Altair, and his wife became Orihime as Vega.
