　むかしむかし、きっちょむさんと言う、とてもゆかいな人がいました。
　Once upon a time, there was a very pleasant person named Kicchom-san.


　ある日の事、とんち名人として有名な彦一と言う子どもが、きっちょむさんにとんち勝負を挑んできたのです。
One day, a child named Hikoichi, who is famous as a wit master, challenged Kicchom-san to a wit match.

　そこで村の和尚さんが立ち会いになり、山の一本道でとんち勝負が始まったのです。
　There, the village monk was present, and the game of wit began on a single road in the mountains.

「おほん、それではこれより、とんち勝負を始めるとする」
"Ehem, well then, we're going to have the game of wit."

「へい。それで、何をすればいいのですか？」
"OK. So, what do I do?"

　きっちょむさんの質問に、和尚さんが答えました。
　In response to Kicchom-san's question, the monk answered,

「うむ、わしが百を数える間に、なにか世の中になくてはならぬ物をこしらえて見ろ。それがこのとんち勝負の題材じゃ」
"Well, while I count a from one to a hundred, I want you to make something that the world needs. That's the subject of the game of wit."

　それを聞いて彦一は、真剣な顔で考えました。
　Hearing that, Hikoichi thought with a serious face.

(百を数える間に物を作るとは難しい。
　しかも、世の中になくてはならぬ物とは。
　だがそれは、きっちょむさんも同じ事。
　きっちょむさんはなかなかのやり手と聞くが、必ず勝ってやる)
(It's hard to make a thing while counting from one to a hundred. Moreover, what is an indispensable thing in the world? But it's the same thing with Kicchom-san. I've heard that Kicchom-san is very good at this, but I'll make sure I win.)

　一方、きっちょむさんは、
(うわさ通り、まじめでかしこそうな子どもだ。だがそれだけでは、きっちょむには勝てないよ)
と、とぼけた様子です。
On the other hand, Kicchom-san has a blank look. (As rumored, he's a serious and smart kid. But that alone doesn't beat me.)

「では、はじめっ！」
"Let's get started!"

　和尚さんのかけ声で、二人は山の中に入って行きました。
　At the call of the monk, the two of them walked into the mountain.

「一、二、三、・・・」
"One, two, three..."

　和尚さんの数える声が、山に響きます。
　The counting voice of the monk echoes in the mountains.

「 ・・・九十八、九十九、百！」
"...Ninety-eight, ninety-nine, one hundred!"

　和尚さんが百と数え終わると同時に、二人はそれぞれ何かを持って帰ってきました。
　As soon as the monk finished counting up to a hundred, the two of them each returned with something.

　まずは彦一が、持ってきた物を得意そうに出しました。
　First, Hikoichi proudly held out the items he had brought with him.

「きっちょむさん、これはどうだ！」
"How about this, Kicchom-san!"

　それは、にわか作りにしてはよく出来た、一体のかかしでした。
　It was a well-made scarecrow for a quickie.

　それを見た和尚さんが、感心して言いました。
　When the monk saw it, he was impressed and said,

「うーむ、なるほど。
　確かにこれは、世の中になくてはならぬ物だ。
　しかもこれなら、簡単に作ることが出来る。
　彦一よ、見事に題材通りの物を持ってきたな」
''Hmm, I see. Surely this is something the world can't live without. What's more, it's easy to make it. Hikoichi, you've brought something brilliantly suited to the subject."

「えっへん」
"Ehem, ehem!"

　和尚さんにほめられて、彦一はうれしそうです。
　Hikoichi is happy to be praised by the monk.

　しかし、きっちょむさんは、きょとんとした顔で彦一に言いました。
　Kicchom-san, however, said to Hikoichi with a stupefied look.

「さすがにあなたは知恵者だ。だが、これ一体だけか？」
"You're a wise man, of course. But is this the only one?"

「当たり前だ！　百を数えるこんなわずかな間に、そうたくさん作れるものか！」
"Of course! I can't make so many in such a small amount of time when he's counting up to a hundred only!"

「そうか、ではわしの勝ちだな」
“Well, I guess I win then.”

　きっちょむさんはそう言って、道ばたの草むらから刈り取ったしばを見せると、一本、二本と数え始めました。
　He said so, and showed him the firewood he had cut from the grass at the roadside, and began to count one or two.

「・・・十八、十九、二十。どうだい、おれは二十本も用意したぞ」
"..Eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Well, I've got twenty of them ready for you."

　それを聞いて、彦一が変な顔をします。
　Hearing that, Hikoichi gives a funny look.

「きっちょむさん。確かに、しばも世の中になくてはならぬ物で、数はそちらが上だが、でもそちらは、ただしばを刈っただけではないか？」
"Kicchom-san. It is true that the firewood is a necessity for the world, and you are superior in number, but aren't you just firewood gathering?"

　すると、きっちょむさんはにっこり笑って答えました。
　Kicchom-san smiled and replied,

「これは、とんち比べのとんち勝負だ。勝(刈)った方が勝ちに決まっているじゃないか」
“It's a wit game of wit trial. It's obvious that I win(gather; both), isn't it?”

「・・・・・・」
「・・・・・・」

「・・・・・・」
「・・・・・・」

　それを聞いた彦一と和尚さんは、二の句が告げませんでした。
　Hearing this, Hikoichi and the monk are at a loss for words.
