　むかしむかし、ずーっとむかしのむかし話だよ。
　Once upon a time, it is a story a long time ago.

　ある村に、働き者じゃが、貧しい暮らしをしている男がおりました。
　There was a poor man who has been working hard at a village.

「ああーっ、腹へったなー。腹いっぱい飯食ってみてえなあ～」
“Oh, I got hungry. I want to have a full meal”

　いつも腹をすかせている男の見る夢は、食べる夢ばっかりだった。
　He has only had dreams that he eats something because he was always hungry.


　ある晩のこと、男は真に不思議な夢を見た。
　One night, the man had a seriously strange dream.

　荒地の果てからやってきた、白い一頭の馬。
　A white horse came from the end of a wilderness.

　馬は光に包まれ、まぶしいほどの白さじゃった。
　The horse, which was filled with light, was bright white.

　馬は、ずっしりとよく実った金色のアワの穂を、美味しそうに食べている。
　The horse enjoyed eating an ear of golden millet, which grew well heavily.

　じっと見つめていると、白い馬は急に首を振った。
　When the man stared at the horse, it suddenly swung its head.

　口元からポーイと飛んだアワの穂は、空中でクルクルと舞ってキラキラ金色に輝きながら、男の前に落ちてきた。
　The ear of millet sprit from its mouth was fallen off in front of the man by fluttering and glittering goldenly in the air.

「あっ、夢か、夢！　何という夢じゃ。金のアワ。それに神々しい白い馬、神さまが現れたあの荒地は」
“Wow, I must be having a dream.What a dream. It was a golden millet.And what was the divine white horse, and the wilderness where the horse appeared?”

　夢から醒めた男は、あの白い馬が立っていた荒地は、自分が一度行ったことのある場所だと気付いた。
　The man woke up from the dream and found the wilderness, where that white horse has been,is where he had once visited before.

　朝が来るのを待ってさっそく出かけ、見覚えのある、その荒地にたどり着いた。
　He left as soon as the sunrise came up and then reached the wilderness he remembered.

「ここだ、間違いない。夢の場所とおなじだ。・・・あっ！」
　That is here. It is the same place in the dream. …Ah!

　驚いたことに、荒地の果てからアワの穂をくわえた夢で見た白い馬が、男に向かって歩いてきた。
　Surprisingly, the horse that he had seen in the dream walked toward the man from the edge of the wilderness by holding an ear of millet in its mouth.

　そしてくわえていた、その金のアワの穂を男に渡した。
　And the horse gave him the ear of golden millet that was being held in its mouth.

「ああ、ありがたい。きっとこれは、この荒地を耕して、アワをうえなさいという、神さまのお告げにちがいない」
“Oh, thank you.This must be a revelation to cultivate this wilderness and to plant millet.”

　男はそう信じて、そこの荒地を耕しはじめた。
　He believed so and started cultivating the wilderness.

　春を待って、種をまき。
　In spring, he sowed seed.

　夏、照りつけるお日様。
　In summer, the sun blazed down.

　畑に這いつくばって、せっせと草を取った。
　He has crawled the field and got rid of weed very hard.

　秋になると、男の植えたアワの穂は重く実り、あたり一面金色に輝いて波打った。
　In autumn, the millet he planted grew well heavily, and glittered goldenly and waved all around.

　大豊作だ。
　He had the best harvest.

　それを売りさばいた男は、たちまち大金持ちとなって「アワの長者」と呼ばれた。
　The man sold the millet and became very rich. And he has got called a “Millet Millionaire”

　それから何年か経ったある年。
　Several years later,

　村はまた、ひどい飢饅にみまわれた。
　The village got suffered from a serious drought.

　これまでにない厳しい寒波が襲って、子供たちは腹を空かして寒さにおびえ、泣きわめいた。
　As an unprecedented severe cold snap swept over the village,children has starved, scared of the cold and cried over.

　村の者は集まって、相談した。
　The villagers discussed.

「アワの長者さまに、おねがいしてみるか」
“Why don’t we ask the millet millionaire for help?”

「そうだそうだ、あそこの蔵には、山ほどアワでもなんでも仕舞い込んである。むかしはわしらと同じ貧乏だった長者さまだ。助けてくれるに違いない。」
“That’s a good idea, there are tons of millet and anything stocked in that granary.And as the millet millionaire has once been a poor villager like us, he must help us.”

　そう話がまとまると、皆して長者さまのお屋敷に詰め掛けた。
　Soon after the discussion concluded, the villagers crowded in to the millionaire’s residence.

　散々頭下げてお願いすると、それまで黙って聞いていた長者さまは一言大声を出した。
　The villagers begged him to help seriously, but the millionaire shouted after quietly listening to their hope.

「うるさい！　聞きとうない！　アワは一粒もない！　無断で蔵を開けたら、アワが無くて泡食うぞ！　わかったか！　さっさと出て行け！」
“Shut up! I don’t want to hear it! There is no millet at all! If you opened my granary without asking, you will became flustered that there is no millet in it! Do you understand? Go home!”

　皆が帰った、その夜のこと。
　At the night after the villagers went home.

「こら、人の屋敷の土壁に何ということをする！」
“Oi! what are you doing on my residence’s mud wall?”

　村の衆は、壁から、床下から、所かまわず、隠し込んだアワをガリガリこさぎだした。
　The villagers began scratching off hidden millet from the wall and from under the floor of all around his residence.

　長者は、村の衆がやることは高がしれてるとたかくくって眠り込んだ。
　The millionaire thought nothing of villager’s activity and fell asleep.

　カリカリカリ、カリカリカリ
　Crunch, crunch.

　音は、蔵から聞こえてきた。
　A sound came from the granary.

「なんじゃ、なんじゃ、村の盗人だな！」
“Oh, what, it must be a robber from the village!”

「あわわわわああ！」
“Whoooaaa!”

　長者は気を失って、へたり込んでしまった。
　The millionaire was shocked and sunk down to the floor.

　カリカリカリ、カリカリカリ
　Crunch, crunch.

　忙しくアワを食べていた何万匹ものネズミたちが、急に静かになったと思うと、いきなり、どっーと音を立てて、
　As soon as thousands of rats, which have busily been eating millet, became quiet,suddenly it sounded thud,

　蔵も御殿のようなお屋敷も、もろとも崩れ落ちた。
　and the granary and the palace-like residence collapsed together.

　立ち上る土煙が収まると、廃墟となった広場に何万というネズミたちが、ひとかたまりに集まった。
　When a cloud of dust blew over, thousands of rats gathered in a mass at a square of the ruin.

　そうして光に包まれ、金色のアワの穂をくわえた白い馬が姿を現した。
　At the same time they were filled with light, a white horse, who was holding an ear of golden millet in its mouth, appeared.

　やがて白い馬は、前足をそろえ、蹴るように高く上げると、ゆっくりと空へ駆けのぼっていった。
　Soon the white horse set its front legs neatly, raised its legs high as if it kicks and slowly run up to the sky.

「ああっ、あの白い馬、夢の中の神さまの馬だ。」
“Oh, that white horse is a deity horse that was appeared in my dream”

　人の苦しみをかえりみなかった長者は、全てをなくして、やっと自分の愚かさに気付いた。
　The millionaire who didn’t consider other’s sufferings finally realized his foolishness by losing everything.

　「泡食った長者」は改心して、皆と残ったアワを分けあった。
“Flustered millionaire” has mended his ways and share the rest of millet with everyone.

　それからというもの男は、村の皆とせっせと荒地を耕し、助け合って仲良く暮らしたんだと。
　Since then, the man have diligently cultivated the wilderness with villagers and helped each other.

　めでたし、めでたし。
　And they lived happily ever after.
