　むかしむかし、一人ぼっちの女の人が、魔法使いにお願いしました。
　Once upon a time, a lonely woman went to a witch and made a wish.

「わたしには、子どもがいません。小さくてもかまわないので、可愛い女の子が欲しいのです」
“I have no kids. I would really like to have a cute girl even if she is so tiny.”

　すると魔法使いは、種を一粒くれました。
　Then the witch gave her a grain of seed.

「これを育てれば、願いがかなうだろう」
“Grow this seed and your dream will come true.”

　女の人が種をまくと、たちまち芽が出てつぼみが一つふくらみました。
　Soon after the woman planted the seed, it came out and became budded.

「まあ、何てきれいなつぼみでしょう」
“What a beautiful bud this is!”

　女の人が思わずキスをすると、つぼみが開きました。
　She kissed it with joy then it popped.

　すると、どうでしょう。
　Oh my goodness!

　そのつぼみの中に、小さな女の子が座っていたのです。
　In the middle of the bud, a tiny girl was sitting.

　女の人は、その小さな女の子にキスをしました。
　The woman kissed the tiny girl.

「はじめまして。あなたの名前は、親指姫よ」
“Nice to meet you. Your name is Thumbelina.”

　女の人は小さな親指姫を、それはそれは大切に育てました。
　The woman cherished her tiny Thumbelina.

　親指姫はお皿のプールで泳ぎ、葉っぱの舟をこぎながらきれいな声で歌いました。
　Thumbelina swam in the pool made of a dish, rowed a boat made of a leaf, singing in a beautiful voice.

　そして夜になると、クルミのからのベッドで眠ります。
　At night, she slept in the bed made of a hull of walnut.

　おふとんは、花びらでした。
　Her blanket was made of a flower petal.

　さて、ある晩の事です。
　One night.

　ヒキガエルのお母さんが、寝ている親指姫を見つけました。
　A toad mom found Thumbelina sleeping.

「あら可愛い。息子のお嫁さんに、ちょうどいいわ。ゲロゲロ」
“How pretty! She would be good for my son.” Croakily.

　ヒキガエルのお母さんは親指姫を連れていくと、スイレンの葉っぱに乗せました。
　The toad mom took Thumbelina away and laid her on a lily pad.

「さあ、起きるんだよ。
“Hi, girl. Good morning.

　今日からお前は、わたしの息子のお嫁さんだよ。
　From now, you will be my daughter-in-law.

　そしてこの沼が、お前の家さ。
　Well, here in this pond is your home.

　いいところだろ。
　Nice place.

　息子を連れて来るから、ここにいるんだよ。ゲロゲロ」
　I will bring my son, so stay here.” Croakily.

　ヒキガエルのお母さんは、そう言ってどこかへ行ってしまいました。
　The toad mom said so and went to somewhere away.

　一人残された親指姫は、シクシクと泣き出しました。
　Thumbelina who was left alone began to cry.

「ヒキガエルのお嫁さんなんて、いやよ。ドロの沼も、きらいだわ」
“What? I hate marrying with a toad! I also hate the muddy pond!”

　すると、その声を聞いた魚たちが集まり、
　Then, fish hearing her voice gathered up to her.

「かわいそうに、あのヒキガエルお嫁さんだなんて」
“She is supposed to marry with the toad! That sounds pitiable.”

「ねえ、逃がしてやろうよ」
“How about letting her escape?”

と、スイレンのくきをかみ切ってくれました。
　Then they bit off the cane of her water lily.

「ありがとう。魚さん」
“Thank you!”

　くきを切られたスイレンの葉っぱは、水の流れに流れていきます。
　Being cut off the stem, her lily pad floated along the stream of water.

　親指姫は飛んでいたチョウチョウにお願いして、葉っぱを引っ張ってもらいました。
　Thumbelina asked a butterfly flying through the sky to pull her boat.

　チョウチョウのおかげで、葉っぱはどんどん川を下っていきます。
　Thanks to the butterfly, her boat went through at great speed.

　するとそれを、コガネムシが見つけました。
　At that time, a gold beetle found Thumbelina.

「おや、珍しい虫がいるぞ」
“Oh, baby. I found an unfamiliar bug.”

　コガネムシは親指姫を捕まえると、森の奥へと連れて行ってしまいました。
　The gold beetle caught Thumbelina and took her deep in the forest.

　おかげで親指姫は、森の奥で一人暮らしです。
　That made Thumbelina live alone deep in the forest.

　親指姫は花のミツを食ベて、草にたまったつゆを飲んで、葉っぱにくるまって眠ります。
　Thumbelina ate flower nectar, drank a water drop on leaves, and slept wrapped in a leaf.

　やがて冬がきて、空から雪が降ってきました。
　After a while, winter had come and snows came down from the sky.

「ああ、何て寒いのかしら」
“How cold it is!”

　寒さに震えながら歩いていた親指姫は、野ネズミの家を見つけました。
　While walking trembling in the cold, she found a wild rat’s house.

「あの、寒さで困っています。どうか、中へ入れてくれませんか？」
“Hello, hello? I’m suffering from coldness. Would you please let me inside?”

　親指姫が声をかけると、野ネズミのおばさんが出てきて言いました。
　Hearing her voice, Ms. wild rat came out and said.

「おやおや、かわいそうに。さあ、中はあったかいし、食ベ物もたくさんあるよ。遠慮せずに、いつまでもいるといいよ」
“Oh, my! Poor girl. Come on, it's warm inside and we have a lot of food. Don’t worry. You should stay here as long as you can.”

　こうして親指姫は、野ネズミのおばさんと一緒に暮らす事になりました。
　In this way, Thumbelina lived with Ms. wild rat.

　さて、野ネズミの家のさらに地面の奥には、お金持ちのモグラが住んでいました。
　Well, a rich mole lived further down the ground of the wild rat’s house.

「なんて可愛い娘だろう」
“How pretty she is.”

　親指姫を気に入ったモグラは、毎日遊びにきます。
　The mole loved her and came to see her every day.

　ある日の事、親指姫はけがをして倒れているツバメを見つけました。
　One day, Thumbelina found an injured swallow laying down.

　やさしい親指姫は、毎日ツバメの世話をしました。
　Thumbelina kindly took care of the swallow every day.

「どうか元気になって、もう一度歌って。わたし、あなたの歌が大好きよ」
“I hope you will be fine and sing songs again. I love your songs.”

　春になり、すっかり元気になったツバメが親指姫に言いました。
　In spring, the swallow had recovered, become so fine, and told Thumbelina.

「あなたのおかげで、また飛べるようになりました。さあ、一緒に南の国へ行きましょう。南の国は、とってもいいところですよ」
“Thanks to you, I can fly again. Why don’t you go to a tropical island with me? It is a nice place!”

「ありがとう。でも、いけないわ」
“Thank you. But I will not.”

「どうして？」
“Why?”

「だって、わたしがいなくなったら、お世話になった野ネズミのおばさんがさびしがります」
“Of course, if I would go with you, Ms. wild rat who took care of me would feel lonely.”

「・・・そうですか。では、さようなら」
“See… Good bye”

　ツバメは親指姫に礼を言うと、南の国へ飛んでいきました。
　The swallow thanked Thumbelina and went flew to the south.

　夏が来ると、野ネズミのおばさんが言いました。
　In summer, Ms. wild rat said to Thumbelina.

「親指姫や、いい話ですよ。
“Dear Thumbelina, good news!

　なんとお金持ちのモグラさんが、あなたをお嫁に欲しいんですって。
　Well, you know, the rich mole would like to marry you!

　よかったね、モグラさんに気に入ってもらって。
　Congratulations! You are his love!

　秋になったら、モグラさんと結婚するのですよ」
　In autumn, you will marry him!

　親指姫は、ビックリしました。
　Thumbelina was surprised.

　モグラはきらいではありませんが、モグラと結婚したらずっと地面の底で暮らさなければなりません。
　She didn’t dislike him. Though, if once she would marry him, she would have to live in the underground forever.

　モグラは、お日さまも花も大きらいだからです。
　He hated both the sun and flowers.

　夏の終りの日、親指姫は野原で言いました。
　On the end of the summer, Thumbelina said in the field.

「さようなら、お日さま。
“Good bye, dear sun.

　さようなら、お花さんたち。
　Good bye, flowers.

　わたしは地面の底に行って、もう二度とあなたたちに会えません」
　I will go down to the underground and never see you again.

　親指姫は悲しくなって、泣き出しました。
　She felt sad and began to cry.

　その時、空の上から聞き覚えのある声が聞こえました。
　At the moment, she heard a familiar voice from the sky.

「親指姫。お迎えに来ましたよ」
　My dear Thumbelina, I came here to pick you up.

　あの時助けたツバメが、飛んできたのです。
　The swallow who Thumbelina rescued at that time came back flying to her.

「聞きましたよ、モグラがあなたをお嫁さんにしたいと。さあ、今度こそ一緒に行きましょう」
“I heard that the mole would like to marry you. Again, why don’t you come with me?”

「ええ、行きましょう」
“See, I will.”

　ツバメは親指姫を背中に乗せて、大空を飛んでいきました。
　The swallow flew over the sky with Thumbelina on his back.

　何日も何日も南へ飛んで、着いたのは花の国です。
　They flew to the south days and days and at last got to the flower land.

　ツバメは花の上に、親指姫をおろしました。
　The swallow put Thumbelina down on a flower.

　花の上には、親指姫と同じくらいの大きさの男の子が立っていました。
　A similar-sized boy as Thumbelina was standing on the flower.

「ようこそ、かわいい娘さん」
“Welcome, pretty girl!”

　この男の子は、花の国の王子さまです。
　He was the prince of the flower land.

「さあ、これをどうぞ」
“Here you are.”

　王子さまは、親指姫の背中に羽をつけてくれました。
　He put wings on the back of Thumbelina.

　それから親指姫は、花の国の王子と結婚しました。
　After that, Thumbelina married the prince of the flower land.

　二人は花から花へと飛びまわりながら、いつまでも幸せに暮らしました。
　They flew over flowers to flowers and lived happily forever.
