尻尾のつり
Fishing by tail

　むかしむかしの、ある冬の事です。
　Once upon a time, it was on a winter day.

　森には木の実がなくなってしまい、サルはお腹がペコペコでした。
　Since nuts in a forest had run out, a monkey has been very hungry.

　ところが川に住むカワウソは、毎日おいしそうな魚をお腹一杯食べています。
　However, an otter who lived in a river has eaten full of fresh fishes every day.

　そこでサルは、カワウソに聞きました。
　So, the monkey asked the otter.

「カワウソくん。どうしたら、そんなに魚が捕れるんだい？」
“Hey, Otter. How can you catch a lot of fishes?”

　するとカワウソは、こう言いました。
　Then the otter answered.

「そんなの簡単さ。
“ It’s easy.

　川の氷に穴を開けて、尻尾を入れるだろう。
　Make a hole in river ice and hang my tail down into it.

　それから動かずに、じっと待つんだ。
　And stay not to move, and quietly wait.

　すると魚が、尻尾をえさと間違えて食らいつく。
　Soon a fish rises to the tail thinking it’s a bait.

　それをぐいっと、釣り上げるんだ」
　Then pull it up at once.”

「へぇー。ぼくもやってみよう」
“Wow. I will try it.”

　サルはさっそく川へ出かけると、カチカチにこおった氷に穴を開けて尻尾をたらしました。
　The monkey headed to a river right away, and made a hole in hard frozen ice and hang his tail down into it.

「うひゃあー、冷たーい！」
“Whew, it’s so cold!”

　尻尾がとっても冷たかったけれど、サルは動かずにじっとがまんをしました。
　Although the monkey was feeling his tail freezing, he was bearing not to move.

「待つんだ、待つんだ。もうすぐ、魚が食べられるぞー」
“Wait, wait. I can eat a fish soon.”

　しかし魚は、なかなか尻尾に食いつきません。
　However, a fish didn’t rise to the tail right away.

　そのうちサルは、ウトウトといねむりをしてしまいました。
　Soon the monkey began dozing off.

　サルがふと気がつくと尻尾がこおりついてしまい、少しも動かす事が出来ません。
　When the monkey woke up, his tail froze on to the ice so that he couldn’t move it at all.

　しかしサルは、それを大きな魚が釣れたと勘違いをして、大喜びで尻尾を引っ張りました。
　However, the monkey misunderstood that he caught a big fish and pulled his tail with a joy.

「うーん、重たいな。こいつは、よほど大きな魚に違いないぞ」
“Ungh, this is so heavy.This must be big enough.”

　サルは顔を真っ赤にして、力まかせに尻尾を引っ張りました。
　The monkey pulled his tail with too much force turning his face red.

「うーん、うーん、うーん」
“Ungh, ungh, ungh”

　そして・・・。
　Then…

　ブチン！！
　SNAP!!

　あまりにも尻尾を力一杯引っ張った為に、サルの尻尾は途中でちぎれてしまいました。
　Because the monkey pulled his tail with too much force, the tail was torn off in the middle.

　サルの顔が赤くて尻尾が短いのは、こういうわけだそうです。
　This is why a monkey has a red face and a short tail.

ワンポイントアドバイス

“rise to the bait”で「（魚が）えさに食いつく」という意味なので、「尻尾に食らいつく」を”rise to the tail”としています。
doze off = いねむりをする。
