　むかしむかし、一休さん(いっきゅうさん)と言う、とんちで評判の小僧さんがいました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a well known priest apprentice boy named Ikkyu.

　その一休さんが、大人になった頃のお話です。
　It was around the time when Ikkyu had grown up to be a man.

「あけまして、おめでとうございます」
"Happy new year "

「今年もどうぞ、よろしくお願いします」
"May this year also bring you the best of luck ."

と、人々が、あいさつをかわしているお正月の朝。
　People were greeting each other on one New Years day morning.

　初もうででにぎわう町通りを、汚い身なりの坊さんが一人やって来ました。
　In the center of town, while everyone was making their first visit of the year to the shrine, a very dirty looking priest came walking down the road.

　一休さんです。
　It was Ikkyu！

　しかしどうした事か、長い竹ざお一本を、高々とかついでいるのです。
　But, what a strange sight. On his shoulder he was carrying a long bamboo pole high up in the air.

　そしてその先っぽに、なにやら白い物がくっついています。
　And what’s more, there was something white stuck to the end of the bamboo pole.

「なんだい、あれは？」
"What in heavens name is that?"

　よくよく見ると、それはどくろ（→人間の頭の骨）でした。
　If you were to look very carefully you could see that it was a skull.

　人々は、気味悪いどくろを見上げてびっくり。
　Everyone looked up and were very surprised to see such a hideous skull on the end of the pole.

「正月そうそう、なんと悪ふざけをする坊主だ」
"Why, its a priest .come to play tricks on us in the New Year. "

「一休さんは、頭でもおかしくなったのか？」
"Or has Ikkyu really lost his mind?"

と、口々にさわぎました。
　Everyone started to discuss this noisily together.

　けれども一休さんはそんな言葉を全く気にせず、すました顔でどくろをかついで歩いています。
　However, Ikkyu seemed totally unfazed by what they were saying and just walked on by.

　物好きな人たちは、一休さんのうしろからワイワイとついて来ました。
　A few curious people excitedly started off behind Ikkyu .

　やがて一休さんは町で一番のお金持ちの金屋久衛（かなやきゅうべえ）さんの立派な家の前に立つと、耳が痛くなるほどの大声で、
　Finally, Ikkyu reached the house of the richest man in the village who goes by the name of Kyuei Kaneya, stood outside his door and shouted at the top of his lungs.

「たのもう、たのもう。一休が、正月のあいさつにまいりました！」
"I beg to ask you a favor. It is I, Ikkyu, come to greet you on this New Years Day! "

と、言いました。
　Shouted Ikkyu.

　家の中から人が出て見ると、汚い身なりの一休さんが気味の悪いどくろをつけた竹ざおをつき立てているので腰をぬかさんばかりにおどろき、大あわてで家の主人に知らせました。
　Someone then came out of the house,As Ikkyu was standing there so dirty and with a skull stuck on the end of the pole, The person of the house was struck with terrible fear.
　The person hurriedly ran back into the house to tell the head of the household.

　いつもうやまっている一休さんがわざわざあいさつにやって来たと聞き、主人は急いで出て来ました。
　Upon hearing that the respectful Ikkyu had come all the way to pay his respects to the head of the house Mr. Kaneya, he hurriedly ran out of the house.

「やあ、これはこれは、久衛（きゅうべえ）さん。あけましておめでとう」
"Why if it isn’t Kyuei, my friend. Happy New Year." Said Ikkyu

「一休さん。これはどうも、ごていねいに。今年も、どうぞよろしく」
"Ikkyu. Why, how kind of you to come, thank you. I hope that this year will also treat you kindly.

　あいさつをして、ヒョイと竹ざおの先のどくろを見たとたん、
　But as soon as Kyuei noticed the skull on the end of the pole he jumped back in astonishment.

「あっ！」
"Good heavens!"

と、言ったまま、まっ青になりました。
　Was all he could say and presently became deathly pale.

「も、もし、一休さん、これはいったい、どうした事ですか？　正月そうそうどくろを持って来るなんて、えんぎが悪いにもほどがあります！」
"Why, Ikkyu, what can this be?
　To bring a skull on the first day of the year brings the worst possible luck! "

　怒る久衛さんに、
　Ikkyu then replied back to the angry Kyuei.

「わっははははははは」
"Ha ha. ha"

　一休さんは、お腹をゆすっての大笑いです。
　Ikkyu burst out into laughter.

「まあまあ、久衛さんや、正月そうそうおどろかしてすまん。これにはわけがあるのじゃ」
"Well well. I’m sorry to have surprised you at the start of the New Year., but there is a reason for this."

「どんな、わけですか？」
"What is the meaning of all this then?” Replied Kyuei.

「うむ。その前に、わしがつくった歌を聞いてほしいがのう」
"Well. I was wondering whether you like to hear a song I have composed“.

　一休さんは、声高らかに歌をよみ上げました。
　Then Ikkyu proceeded to sing aloud his song.

♪正月は、めいどの旅の一里塚
♪ New Year is a milepost in our lifelong journey to the other world.

♪めでたくもあり、めでたくもなし
♪ A time to celebrate a time to mourn

　一休さんの歌に、久衛さんは首をかしげました。
　Upon hearing Ikkyus strange song, Kyuei tilled his head from left to right in bewilderment.

「はて、『めでたくもあり、めでたくもなし』とは？　一休さん、これはどういう意味でしょうか？」
"I wonder, A time to celebrate a time to mourn. What does it mean"?
　What does it all mean Ikkyu? "

「うむ。
"Well.

　誰でも正月が来ると、一つずつ年をとる。
　Every time a new year is welcomed in, another year of life is taken away from our us.

　という事は、正月が来るたびに、それだけめいどへ近づく。
　So that means that every time New Year approaches, we get closer to our destiny with the other world.

　つまり、死に近づくわけだ。
　That means we will be getting closer to death.

　だから正月が来たといって、めでたがってもいられない。
　Therefore, when New Year comes it is also a time for mourning.

　それで、『めでたくもあり、めでたくもなし』じゃよ」
　So, that’s why it is a time for celebration and a time for mourning ".

「ああ、なるほど」
"Ah, now I see. "

「どんな人でも、必ずいつかは死ぬ。
"No matter who you are, someday you will die.

　そして、このようなどくろになりはてる。
　You will become like this skull here.

　こういうわたしだって、あと何回正月をむかえられるかわからん。
　We do not know how many New Years we will be able to welcome in again.

　あんたも、おなじじゃよ」
　The same goes for you "

「はい。たしかに」
"Yes…That is true ".

「久衛さんや、生きているうちに、たんといいことをしなされや。そうすりゃ、極楽(ごくらく→てんごく)へ行かれるからの」
"Kyuei, while you are alive, please make the most of your life.
　Then you will be able to reach paradise"

「はい！」
"Yes!"

「あんたは、大金持ちだ。
"You are a very rich man.

　少しでいいから、あまっているお金は困っている人たちにあげなされ。
　Even if it is only a little bit, please give your left over money to people who are having difficulties.

　めいどまでは、お金は持って行けんからな。
　Since you cannot bring your money with you into the other world.

　はい、さいなら」
　That is all, goodbye."

　大金持ちの久衛さんをはじめ、ほかの大勢のお金持ちがこの一休さんの教えをまもって、
　From then on starting with Kyuei, other rich people then decided to follow Ikkyus example

　貧しい人々を助けたということです。
　and started to help the poor in need.
