　むかしむかし、彦一(ひこいち)と言う、とてもかしこい子どもがいました。
　Once upon a time, there was a very clever child called Hikoichi.


　ある春の日の事、殿さまが二十人ばかりの家来を連れて、お花見へ出かける事になりました。
　One spring day, His Highness decided to go out with about 20 of his servants to view the cherry blossoms.

　そのお花見には、殿さまのお気に入りの彦一も呼ばれています。
　His Highness' favorite, Hikoichi, is also invited to participate in the cherry blossom viewing.

　そして出発の時、殿さまがみんなに言いました。
　And at the time of their departure, His Highness said to everyone,

「みんなには花見の荷物を運んでもらうが、どれでも好きな物を持って行くがよいぞ」
"I'm going to have everyone carry their luggage for the cherry blossom viewing, and you may take whichever you like."

　すると家来たちは、
　And the servants said,

(では、何を持って行こうかな)
(Then let's see what we can take.)

と、前に並べられた荷物を、グルリと見回しました。
　and glanced around at the luggage laid out in front of them.

　そこには殿さまが腰をかけるいす、地面にしく毛せん、茶わんや皿や土びん、つづみやたいこなどの鳴物道具(なりものどうぐ)に、とっくりやさかづきなどの酒もり道具。
　There is a chair for His Highness to sit on, felt on the ground, tea bowls, plates, earthenware teapots, hand drum, drum and other musical instruments, as well as tools for drinking, such as earthenware sake bottles and sake cups.

　他には歌をよむ時の筆やすずりやたんざくなどもあります。
　Other items include brushes, inkstones and strips of paper for poetry compositions.

　どうせなら軽い物が良いと、家来たちは我先にと軽い荷物を選んでいきます。
　The servants were quick to choose light items, preferably smaller ones.

　そんな様子を彦一がじっと見ていると、最後に残ったのは竹の皮にくるんだにぎりめしや、おかずの入っている包みだけでした。
　As Hikoichi watched intently, all that was left were rice balls wrapped in bamboo skin and a package containing side dishes.

(はは～ん、食べ物は重いから、誰も手を付けないな。しかしこれは、いい物が残ってくれたぞ)
(Haha~, the food is so heavy, no one's going to touch it. But they left me with a good one.)

　彦一は、わざとガッカリした様子で言いました。
　Hikoichi said, looking purposely disappointed,

「何と、こんなに重たい物しか残っていないとは・・・」
"How could there be so much weight left...?"

　そして重そうに弁当の包みをかつぐと、みんなのあとをついて行きました。
　Then he picked up the lunch packages, looking heavily laden, and followed the others.

　それを見た家来たちは、と、クスクスと笑いました。
　When the servants saw that, they chuckle to themselves.

(知恵者と評判の彦一だが、あんな重たい物をかつぐとはバカな奴じゃ)
(Hikoichi is reputed to be a wise man, but he's a fool to carry such a heavy load.)

　さて、お目当ての山に到着した一行は、囲いのまくをはり、毛せんをしいて荷物を広げると、彦一の持って来たお弁当を食べる事にしました。
　After arriving at the mountain, the group decided to put up the curtain of the enclosure, spread the felt and put their luggage down, and eat the lunch that Hikoichi had brought.

　そして花をながめるやら、踊るやら、歌をつくるやら、酒盛りをするやらして、みんな思う存分にお花見を楽しみました。
　Everyone enjoyed viewing the flowers, dancing, singing, and drinking to their heart's content.

　そしていよいよ、お城ヘ帰る事になり、家来たちが持って来た荷物をかたづけていると、彦一が殿さまに言いました。
　Finally, they had to go back to the castle and pack up the luggage that the servants had brought with them. Hikochi said to His Highness,

「殿さま。このまま行きと同じ道を帰るのですか？」
“Your Highness. Are we going to go back the same way we went?”

「ふむ。と、言うと？」
“Hmmm. What do you mean?”

「ごらんくだされ。向こうの山も、あの通りの見事な花盛りでございます。いかがでしょう。ひとつあの山の花をながめながらお帰りになっては」
“Please take a look at it. The flowers in the mountains are also in full bloom, as you can see. What do you think? Why don't you go home while gazing at the flowers on tha mountains?”

「なるほど、それはよい事に気がついたな」
“I see, that's a good thing to realize.”

　殿さまは大喜びで、さっそく家来たちに言いました。
　His Highness was overjoyed, and immediately told his servants,

「まだ日も高いし、向こうの花をながめながら帰ろうと思うが、どうじゃ？」
"The sun is still high, and I think I'll go home and gaze at the flowers over there, how about that?”

　それを聞いた家来たちは、荷物をかついで向こうの山をこえるなんてまっぴらと思いましたが、殿さまの言葉には逆らえません。
　When the servants heard this, they thought it was a bad idea to carry their luggage across the mountains, but they could not resist the words of their lord.

「はい。お供いたします」
“Yes. We'll go with you.”

と、しぶしぶ頭を下げました。
　They reluctantly bowed their heads.

　すると彦一が、
　Then Hikoichi said,

「では殿さま。わたくしがご案内いたします」
“Well, Your Highness. I'll show you around.”

と、みんなの先に立って歩きます。
　He stands and walks ahead of everyone.

　殿さまが家来たちを見ると、みんな大きな荷物を持っていますが、けれど彦一は小さくたたんだふろしきを腰にぶら下げているだけです。
　When His Highness looks at his servants, they are all carrying large bags, but Hikoichi only has a small folded furoshiki hanging from his waist.

　殿さまは不思議に思って、彦一に尋ねました。
　His Highness wondered, and asked Hikoichi,

「これ彦一。お前の荷物はどうした？」
“Hikoichi,　 what happened to your stuff?”

　すると彦一は、ニッコリ笑って言いました。
　Hikoichi grinned and said,

「はい、わたしの荷物は、みなさんのお腹の中にございます」
"Yes, my baggage is in your bellies, sir.”
