　Once upon a time, there was an old woman living in the mountain.

　She cherished Buddha so much, and she put her hands together and pray in front of a Buddhist alter every night.

　However, she doesn’t know the words of sutra.

　 One day, a Buddhist priest came and said to her,

‘I’m lost. Would it be OK if I stayed at your place tonight?’
‘Sure, no problem.’
　The old woman treated him with warm hospitality. Then, she noticed and said,
‘Could you tell me the words of sutra?’

　Actually, the priest was a lazy person, so he didn’t know the sutra at all.
　He couldn’t tell her the truth even though he is a priest. He had no choice but to sit in front of the Buddhist alter and thought about what he should say.

　Then, A mouse popped it’s head out of the hole in the wall in front of him.
　The priest said,

‘A mouse popped out of the hole’
　as he chanted the sutra with rhythm.
　Next, two mice popped their head out of the hole,

‘Next, two mice popped out of the hole’
　he said.

　When he was thinking about what he should say next, Three mice popped their head out of the hole and watch him.
　So the priest said in a loud voice,

‘Next, three mice popped out of the hole’
　The three mice were surprised at the voice and ran into the hole.

　And he said,

‘Finally, all mice ran away from the house’

　The priest rang the orin, a small bell, and said,
‘That’s all for today.
　This is a little bit strange but blessed sutra.
　You chant it every day like I did.’

　The old woman feels quite well, and
‘A mouse popped out of the hole’
‘Next, two mice popped out of the hole’
‘Next, three mice popped out of the hole’
‘Finally, all mice ran away from the house’
　she chanted the sutra every night.

　One night, three thieves sneaked into her house.
　At that time, she was chanting the sutra in front of the Buddhist alter.

‘What is she doing?’
　One of thieves put his face out of shoji, a paper sliding door, behind the old woman,

‘A mouse popped out of the hole’
　she said in a loud voice.
‘Oh, Is she talking about me?’
‘What are you mumbling?’
　The other thief puts his face,

‘Next, two mice popped out of the hole’
　the old woman said loudly again.
‘That figures. She’s talking about us.’
‘Let’s see.’
　Three thieves put their face out of the shoji,

‘Next, three mice popped out of the hole’
　they heard her voice again.
‘Oh no, she must have eyes on her back. It’s scary.’

　Three thieves were astonished, and ran out of the house.
　Without knowing it, the old woman said
