　むかしむかし、あるところに、貧乏(びんぼう)だけど心優しい、おじいさんとおばあさんがいました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a poor but kind hearted old man with his wife.

　ある年の大晦日(おおみそか)の事です。
　One cold New Year’s Eve Day, t

　おじいさんとおばあさんは、二人でかさを作りました。
 the old man and his wife made straw hats.

　それを町へ持って行って売り、お正月のおもちを買うつもりです。
 The old man packed and headed to the nearby town to sell the hats so that he could buy rice cakes for New Year.

「かさは五つもあるから、もちぐらい買えるだろう」
“There are five hats to sell. I guess I can at least buy rice cakes.” said the old man.

「お願いしますね。それから今夜は雪になりますから、気をつけて下さいよ」
“I hope so. Please be careful as it will be snowing tonight.” said his wife.

　おじいさんは、五つのかさを持って出かけました。
　The old man left home with his five hats.

　家を出てまもなく、雪が降ってきました。
　Soon after he left, it began to snow.

　雪はだんだん激しくなったので、おじいさんはせっせと道を急ぎました。
　The old man hurried his way to the town as it snowed heavier and heavier.

　村はずれまで来ると、お地蔵さま(おじぞうさま)が六つならんで立っています。
　When he arrived on the edge of his village, he passed in front of six Jizo statues that stood silently on the roadside.

　お地蔵さまの頭にも肩にも、雪が積もっています。
　He could see snow piled up on their heads and shoulders.

　これを見たおじいさんは、そのまま通り過ぎる事が出来ませんでした。
　The old man couldn’t just pass by the Jizo statues.

「お地蔵さま。雪が降って寒かろうな。せめて、このかさをかぶってくだされ」
“Oh, poor Jizo-sama. You must be freezing under the snow. Please put these hats on your head.”

　おじいさんはお地蔵さまに、売るつもりのかさをかぶせてやりました。
　The old man put his hats on Jizo statues, which he was going to sell in the town.

　でも、お地蔵さまは六つなのに、かさは五つしかありません。
　But he only had five hats while there were six Jizo statues.

　そこでおじいさんは自分のかさを脱いで、最後のお地蔵さまにかぶせてやりました。
　So, the old man took his hat off and put it on the sixth Jizo statue.

　家へ帰ると、おばあさんがびっくりして言いました。
　Arriving home, his wife came to meet him at the door but was surprised to see the old man.

「まあまあ、ずいぶん早かったですねぇ。それに、おじいさんのかさはどうしました？」
“You came home so early. What happened with your hat?”

　おじいさんは、お地蔵さまのことを話してやりました。
　The old man told her the whole story of the Jizo statues.

「まあまあ、それは良い事をしましたねえ。おもちなんて、なくてもいいですよ」
　おばあさんは、ニコニコして言いました。
“Well, you did such a nice thing. I’m proud of you. We won’t die without rice cakes on New Year’s day.” said the wife smiling.

　その夜、夜中だと言うのに、ふしぎな歌が聞こえてきました。
　Somewhere around midnight, they were awakened by a strange chanting.

♪じいさんの家はどこだ。
♪Up there, up there, where is the house of the old man?

♪かさのお礼を、届けに来たぞ。
♪Up there, up there, we are here with a present.

♪じいさんの家はどこだ。
♪Up there, up there, where is the house of the old man?

♪かさのお礼を、届けに来たぞ。
♪Up there, up there, we are here with a present.

　歌声はどんどん近づいて、とうとうおじいさんの家の前まで来ると、
　The chanting came closer and closer. Then it finally arrived in front of the old man’s house.

　ズシーン！
　 Thump!

と、何かを置く音がして、そのまま消えてしまいました。
　They heard something being left at their door and the chanting faded away.

　おじいさんがそっと戸を開けてみると、おじいさんのあげたかさをかぶったお地蔵さまの後ろ姿が見えました。
　The old man opened the door quietly. There he saw the back of six Jizo statues standing in the snow with his straw hats.

　そして家の前には、お正月用のおもちやごちそうが山のように置いてありました。
　To their amazement, it was full of rice cakes for New Year and plenty of food for the rest of their lives.
