人魚が教えてくれた秘密
The secret that a mermaid told to the young men

　むかしむかし、仕事が終わった若者たちが浜辺でお酒を飲んでいると、海から美しい歌声が聞こえてきました。
　Once upon a time, young men drank on the beach after work, they heard a gentle singing voice from the sea.

「いったい、誰が歌っているのだろう？」
‘Who is singing now?’

　若者たちは船を探しましたが、海に船はありません。
　Young men looked around, but there is no ship on the sea.

　でも確かに、歌声は海から聞こえてくるのです。
　However, the singing voice is certainly coming from the sea.

「なんて美しい歌声なんだ…」
‘What a beautiful voice…’

　若者たちはお酒を飲むのもわすれて、その歌声に聞きほれていました。
　Young men forgot to drink and they were entranced by the singing voice.

　それから数日後、若者たちが海へ魚を取るアミを入れると大きな魚がかかりました。
　Several days later, huge fish came to the net.

「今日も、大漁だなぁ～！」
‘We’ve made a big catch today!’

「おい、ちょっと待て。こいつは魚じゃないぞ！…人魚だ！」
‘Hey, wait. It is not fish…a mermaid!’

　アミにかかった人魚を見て、若者たちはおどろきました。
　Young men astonished to see a mermaid in the net.

　この海にはむかしから、人魚が住んでいるという伝説があったのです。
　Legend has it that there is mermaids living on the sea.

「人魚は、本当にいたんだ」
‘Mermaids truly exist.’

「こいつを売れば、大もうけが出来るぞ」
‘If we sell the mermaid, we could make a lot of money.’

　若者たちは、大喜びです。
　They were so delighted.

　すると人魚が、涙をこぼして言いました。
　Then, the mermaid shed tears and said,

「お願いです。どうかこのまま、海へかえしてください」
‘Please let me release into the sea.’

「いや、逃がすわけにはいかん。
‘No, we can’t.

　お前ならきっと、高く売れるからな。
　You can be sold with a high price.

　これでおれ達は、億万長者だ！はっはっはっ」
　So we can be a millionaire! Ha ha ha.

　人魚は涙をふくと、しずかに歌をうたいはじめました。
　The mermaid wiped away tears and began to sing calmly.

　その歌声は、いつか浜辺で聞いたものと同じものでした。
　The singing voice was the same as it was heard on the beach.

「おい、この歌…？！」
‘Oh, this song…?!’

「あれは、お前が歌っていたのか」
‘Were you singing at that time?

　人魚の歌声には、人をあやつる力があります。
　It is said that mermaid’s singing voice have an ability to manipulate people.

　若者たちは人魚の歌声を聞いて、うっとりと夢を見ているような気持ちになりました。
　Mermaid’s singing voice made them feel like they are in a dream.

　やがて歌い終わると、人魚が言いました。
　After finishing the song, the mermaid said,

「もし、わたしを助けてくださるのなら、海の秘密を教えてあげましょう。」
‘If you help me, I’ll tell you a secret of the sea.’

　人魚の歌を聞いて心がおだやかになった若者たちは、人魚に言いました。
　Their heart were calm after listening to her song. They said

「よし、お前を助けてやろう」
‘All right, we’ll help you.’

「ありがとうございます！」
‘Thank you so much!’

　人魚はうれしそうにニッコリ笑うと、船から海に飛び込んで言いました。
　The mermaid smiled, jumped into the sea and said,

「10日後の朝に、大津波(おおつなみ)が村をおそいます。
‘The morning 10 days later, a major tsunami will come to your village.

　出来るだけはやく、高いところに逃げてください!」
　Please run away to the higher place as soon as possible!’

　それを聞いた若者たちは、村の長老に人魚の言葉を知らせに行きました。
　Young men went to the village elder to tell the words of mermaid.

「長老、大変です！」
‘Village elder, it’s an emergency!’

　人魚の話を聞いた長老は、たいそう驚き、深呼吸してからこう言いました。
　After listening about the tsunami, the village elder was greatly surprised and said after taking a deep breath.

「みなのもの、荷物をまとめてひなんの準備じゃ。ここらで一番高い山は…？」
‘Everyone, let’s pack your luggage and get ready for escaping.Which is the tallest mountain in our village?’

「うら山です！」
‘The mountain behind the village!’

「でも、あそこは人が歩けるような道はないぞ…」
‘But, there’s no road we can walk…’

「あんなけもの道、うちのばあちゃんの足じゃ、とてもじゃないが登れん　…どうしたらいいんだ」
‘My grandmother can’t walk that animal trails.…What should we do?’

　このままでは、村人みんなが大津波に飲み込まれてしまう…。
　All Villagers would be swallowed up by tsunami at this rate…

　若者たちが肩を落としていると、長老が言いました。
　When the young men dropped their shoulders, the village elder said,

「落ち込むのは、まだ早い。
‘It’s too early to feel depressed.

　大津波まで、まだ10日あるではないか。
　We have 10 more days to prepare for a major tsunami.

　村の者みんなが登れるような道を作るのじゃ。」
　Let’s make a road that every villagers can walk.’

　けもの道しかない裏山に、誰もが歩けるような道を作る事になりました。
　They decided to change the animal trail into a new road in the mountain behind the village.

　村の若者たちは、せっせと道を作りました。
　Young men did their best to make a road.

　それを見ていた隣村の村人が、声をかけました。
　People in the neighboring village told to them,

「おぉ～い、何をやっとるんじゃ」
‘Hey, what are you doing here?’

　若者が人魚から聞いた大津波の話をすると…
　Young men told them about the major tsunami which is heard from the mermaid.

「バカバカしい。人魚なんて、いるはずないだろう」
‘It’s boring. Mermaid can’t be here.’

「本当なんだ。本当に人魚はいて、朝に大津波(おおつなみ)が来ると言ったんだ！」
‘It’s true. We actually met mermaid and she said that the major tsunami is coming in the morning!’

「津波なんて来るわけないだろ。こんなヤツらほっといて、さぁ、行くぞ。」
‘It’s ridiculous. Leave them alone. Let’s go.’

　村人にバカにされても、自分たちの命を守るため、若者たちは必死で道を作りました。
　Though young men were made a fool, they were desperate to pave the road for protecting their lives.

　そして、人魚が予言した前日の朝・・・
　Then, the morning before the day of tsunami…

　ついに裏山の道が完成しました。
　the new road has opened finally.

「みなのもの、よくがんばってくれた。よし、村の者全員で、裏山にひなんじゃ。」
‘Thank you for doing your best, everyone. Let’s take refuge to the mountain behind village.’

「おぉぉーーーーーっ！！！！！」
‘Yah----!!’

　若者の村は全員が無事、裏山にひなんすることができました。
　At last, every villagers could take refuge to the mountain behind village.

　陽が昇るころ、裏山から海を見てみると…
　When the sun rises, they were watching the sea from the mountain.

「つ、津波だーー！！！」
‘Look! Tsunami is coming!!!’

　津波が迫ってくるのが見えました。
　They saw the tsunami is approaching.

　隣村の人々は津波にのまれないよう、裏山へと必死で走っています。
　People in the neighboring village was running to the mountain to escape from tsunami.

「おぉーーーい、こっちだーー！」
‘Come here!

「はやく逃げろーー！！」
‘Run quickly!’

「走れーーー！！」
‘Run!!’

　その日の夜、裏山から村を見ると、もうそこは、海でした。
　When in the night time, their village was already sank in the sea.

　人魚が言った通り、誰も見た事がないような大津波がおそってきましたが、
　Though their village was swallowed up by the major tsunami that no one had ever seen, as the mermaid said,

　裏山への道を作った若者の村の人々、そしてその道に助けられた隣の村人たち誰一人、死んだ者はいなかったという事です。
　It is said that in every villagers in the young men and the people in neighboring village,there were no casualty.
